when i start my 97 5sfe engine : sometimes it revs up and then just stalls , and other times it idls on very low RPM when it is supposed to be high ! and i had to press the gas pedal and rev it a lil bit untill it gets to normal .........whats wrong with it ? what can i do to maintina my engine and what kind of additives should i use to keep my engine running smoothly ....

Sounds like it could be your idle control valve. Get it cleaned or replaced.

Let me work this out... For comparrison:-
I filled my car the other day, cost £45.
Petrol/gas is £0.939 a Litre in UK at moment, so
45/0.939 = 47.9233 Litres bought.
UK Imperial Gallon is 4.54 Litres.
47.9233/4.54=10.555 Gallons
I get aroung 300 miles on a full tank too so
300/10.555 = 28.4225 Mpg Average.
If you want to save money, drive like an old lady, keep the roof up at all times, turn you ICE off and don't use your aircon or lights! LOL

i get 220 before filling up 12 gallons, thats bad
Our celicas are supposed to get better milage , so combined with my really rough-running engine , could it be something like the oxygen sensor ? and is there any HOW_TO i can use so that i can clean my ICV and oxygen sensor ?? thanks alot ppl

I have been researching and regarding to my really rough idle i came up with this :
- it could be the idle air control valve
- some sensor ) oxygen , MAF)
- weak engine mounts
- Auto tranny problem
also the car is really rough when not moving and in Drive , when i turn on my A/C the rpm drops instead of going up !!
i would like someone to tell me how to clean my idle control valve , change my oxygen sensor and tell me something and the engine mount thing ( sounds like a big problem ) , how much would it cost to fix or renew ?
Thanks

I had the same problem with another car. First off, you've got to find the Idle control valve! I've no idea where it is on a Celi! Sometimes they get a bit cr#ppy with age. I replaced the entire unit on my old car but later discovered that I could have got it cleaned up instead.
If memory serves me, there were some vacuum hoses connected to it and a electrical multi-plug. If the celica is the same, maybe there's a leak in one of the hoses or the plug's not connected properly?
I don't know, just a thought...
Its gonna be one of those "trial and error" faults I think.

300 miles is exactly where you should be on average with your 5S.
My first thought when reading your problem was that you might have an auto tranny problem. However that would pretty expensive to fix if that's the case, so try out some of those other solutions first to see if they fix the problem. OR just find a repair shop in town that will give you a free estimate and then fix it yourself after they've diagnosed the problem.

well , i kind of excluded an auto tranny problem because when i start it , it is in very low RPM and it is rough in Neutral as well , i will try and get a hold of my idle valve , i think i found a how-to but just need some more pointers , one more thing : why does my rpm drop when i turn on my A/C instead of going up ??
add: can anyone tell me how to change my oxygen sensor ??

usally there are two bolts holding into the ex. mani. simply unbolt them and disconnect the wire from the harness take the new one put it in rebolt it down reconnect wire and start her back up...good too go....o2 sensor's are around 70 dollars or so thou and usally if it is the o2 you will havea CEL on...but yea all farely simple.

Ok , thanks , can someone provide me with a link to a detailed how-to clean my idle air control valve ??? i dont have much experience so i need a lot of details
>
I'm not sure what I'd use to be honest? I live in the UK, no doubt the stuff we use over here might not be available in the states? You could use an alchohol based solution to clean it, so Methalated Spirit or whit spirit or whatever its called where you are? It might not work but its worth a try? If it is the Idle Control Valve that's faulty, you might be better off replacing it altogether?

ok.... this post have been up for a couple of days and i still havent got the answer i need !
ALL i need is that someone walk me through or give me a link to a detailed how-to for cleaning my Idle Air Control Valve/..... Please...

on my 7afe there are 4 phillips screws on the unit, which is on the bottom of the throttle body. remove the 4 screws and the unit comes off. spray and gunk out of the unit and out of the passages in the throttle body, then install it again.

what about the other stuff on there , there are a bunch of hoses( vacum hoses i believe ) , seleniods , the throttle spring thing and the air intake tube......honestly i couldnt even take off the air intake tube
then take it to a shop, the air intake is just held by 2 hoseclamps. if hoseclamps are beyond your abilities then its best to let a shop do this.

Hoseclamps arent the problem , i noticed there are a couple of smaller hoses on there , one of them is a vacum hose , the other ... i didnt know and i dont like messing with things that i dont know what they do !

On the car I had the same problem with, I replaced the entire unit. It was connected to the inlet manifold if I recall. There were some bolts, hoses with clamps which had to come off and the main harness electrical connector which also had to come off. It was fiddly but I managed to get it swapped out in a couple of hours.
I've no idea where it is on the Celi, plus I've got a 3SGE motor which is probably different to yours. If you do this work yourself, it doesn't matter too much if you know what each hose is for, just make sure you put everything back the way it was, label the hoses if necessary and make sure you connect them to the correct ports on the valve.
You won't learn unless you give it a go...

Final question : it is getting hot and i use my A/c more often , now i know there is a relay to make the engine rev up on idle when the a/c is on , i think mine is out or something because my idle drops with the a/c , so any idea where is it ? how to change it ? or whats the cause if it is not a relay ?
