You need those clips.
The shifter cable will pop off if you don't put the clips on.
I might have spare ones.
PM me if you can't find them at your local Autozone.

what are these clips called? are there certain sizes for them? i will try going to auto zone tomorrow morning.

yeah they probably come in different sizes. if you pull the pin out that you are supposed to pull out, I think it's the same size (you should check first) you can take it with you when you go. also, you could just re-use the stock ones.

take a 12mm socket and push it over the clip, it should be able to help you put pressure on all sides of the clip simultaneously.

i just installed mine last week, yes it was a punk to take those plastic cups/clips or however you'd like to call them, at first i tried taking them off without using a vice..take it from me--use the vice. and when i put them back on my new shifter, i simply lined up the cup/clip on the ground with where it has to clip onto the shifter and put a cloth over the shifter itself and hammered it in not using too much force but enough. And have you checked toyotaworld? Probably be hard to find a part so small but it's worth a try.
