streetbike recomendations - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #49069 31 posts Started by celi_gt_racer
i'm shopping for a sportbike now guys, for a summer ride. Something in a 600cc - preferably an older model (affordable) ... i dont mind the bike being carb'd, just as long as it has relatively low miles and has been taken care of. Any brand/model recomendations - i really like the looks of a Ninja zx-6 w/ the ram air...maybe a CBR ... R6 ? any personal opinions? maybe you know some1 that has a nice bike for sale? help me out here smile.gif P.S. - my budget is around 3k give or take a couple hundred bucks

look into a triumph TT like an 03 about, usually the people who buy them new take good care of them and they make good 600 bikes, all the other "popular" bikes most ppl get and beat on which is why i rec a triumph, is very similar to a gsx, same chassis if i recall

theres one in action, has efi so they hang with all cept newer r6's, but even then its a close match, great handling, nice price, and most of them are in great condition when you find them

you know why they put sheep at the edge of a cliff.... that way they push back!(2:27:32 AM) edit: please f*cking work, f*ck, sh*t, piss(2:28:08 AM) edit: that did the trick
go with the CBR 600 RR best starter bike. best 600 out there bar none. its very versatile, and it will keep you excited and having fun for a while. fast enough for a experienced rider, but also not to much bike for a beginner.

I'm a GSXR fan so i say teh GSXR600 is a great start bike, and definitely something that you won't get bored with.
oh and most ALL sport bikes are ram air wink.gif
what are some of the bigger differences between the 'popular' models like the cbr, gsxr, r6, etc?
Your choices would be the gsxr600, the Yamaha R6, Honda CBR600, or the Ninja zx6

Dont go with a triumph like someone mentioned up above. the parts are expensive to replace because it is not as popular. And there isnt much of an aftermarket for it.

If i were you, I would get an older model of the bikes mentioned above. Their newest models like the 00+ are always gonna be faster and depending on your skill could be too much for a beginner. Get yourself a used and older bike. that way if you drop it or lay it down for anyreason... you dont have to worry about it being your Brand Spankin New R6 or CBR's paint job. wink.gif

good luck man and be safe smile.gif

x2!!! ..but of course, thats coming from a CBR600 owner biggrin.gif
i like the CBR's ...but in older models (pre 00') - there were no R's or RR's , or at least i cant find them...they are all f2,f3,f4, and f4i from what i can find around here - what's the difference? reccomend 1 over the others? still leaning towards the ninja's ... zx6 (or zx7r if i can get it cheap enuff)
Have you thought about just getting a old school honda cruiser or something to start learning on? I picked up a 85 Honda shadow to start learning on for $500, and I'm glad I did. I would've recked so fast if I started off on my R6, I'm really glad I picked up a cheap bike to learn on.

When buying a bike its a good idea to go sit on as many as you can and see what feels comfortable. Most of us can't use a sport bike as good as pros, so I'd look for something that looks good to you and you fit on.

Also don't forget about picking up some gear, that can add up quickly but is well worth it smile.gif

i started on a 94 kawi zx7r it was an awesome bike to start on and it was very fast.
i love tha look of the 96-03 zx-7r's man...it's just sumthin about em
lets just go for common sense here

the SLOWER your first bike is the BETTER off you are.
you will learn the various aspects of the bike and still have a lot of fun.

you DO NOT need anything larger than a 600...anything bigger is stupid

start on a Ninja 250...its a very easily findable very affordable first bike MANY MANY riders have started on one.

accept the fact you WILL drop your bike, you WILL mess up the fairings and body so don't start with anything flashy or try and be biker boys.

CBR f4i is another good starter bike, i mainly suggest the f4i as opposed to the older F1,f2,f3 bikes. I started one of my good friends on a 2000 CBR F4i and he loves the bike.
My brother started out with a YZF600R

then it was stolen from Whidbey NAS

so do you think i could start/learn on a 600, considering i have only really riden friends' dirt bikes on occassion (i know the basics, i just dont have a whole lot of experience)? i want to get something that i will still enjoy even after i become a decent rider or have riden awhile...
Learn on a 250.

Take it easy and learn on a 600, I am thinking about a bike as well and I wouldn't go over 600cc even though i have dirt bike experience. Be responsible and have fun, I'd go with an R6 or the cbr based on parts and availability. Alot of bikes get dropped but as long as there is no frame damage I wouldn't have a problem owning one. Get a bike cheap and easily fix the flarings/shifter/brake lever etc

ill hopefully be finacing a suzuki sv 650 soon if my dad co-signs it for me, im gunna try to have one before mid july
I personally am a HUGE fan of Yamaha bikes so i would start on either the YZF600 or R6. The biggest difference you will see between those two bikes is the YZF doesn't have as good of a suspension set up as the R6 so your ride will be a little more rough. You will also have a more balanced power ratio through all gears and all rpm's on the YZF. Look wise the R6 is by far better looking than the YZF. However...The GSXR600 and Suzuki in general make phenomenal bikes, the parts are cheap and easy to find and they are very rider friendly (think street bikes for dummy's). Honda's bikes, to me at least, are a bunch of garbage much like the cars. In thier struggle to keep up in a market where they are rapidly falling behind the competion. They cut some weight off the bike but they also tweaked the suspension so that it is a rougher ride for you which is never any good. I gotta say to get the most bike and the best beginner bike for your buck go with an 01-03 R6 or GSXR600.

I personally am looking forward to the day I can get my R1...mmmmm, sex on two wheels.
PS - yamaha *thumbs down*

i'm assuming neither of you will ever have a 3s-gte swap then? since the motor was DESIGNED BY YAMAHA wink.gif ... gotcha good there biggrin.gif
If you (or anyone for that matter) are even remotely considering getting a first bike, read this. Twice. Ignore all of the idiots recommending any type of supersport 600, and do yourself a favor.

x2 on the SV 650

enough power to put a smile on your face but controllable and easy to learn on. They are also very comfortable for long hauls.

Suzuki makes the best bikes pound-for-pound in my opinion.
I love my Kawasaki zzr 600 as my daily.
Also my Suzuki gsxr 750 track bike is fun too.
