Celica GT-Four's in USA - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #49190 31 posts Started by 3SGTE
Just a simple questions guys. How come over there in the U.S there a very few GT-Fours? Are they only in your country due to private importers?? How hard is it to import them over?? Strict rules??

Thanks
yea...importing rules are very strict.....it also depends on what state your in.. the imports that are over here are usually from private importers
correct me if im wrong, but i think there are only like 5 or 6 real gt4's in the states.

No way, thats insane.... quite alot of you guys have modified your celica's to be turbo's though aint you.. saw quite a few when browsing the users cars. Are subaru's and evolutions all imports too then?? Gutted for you guys.. Should come over and have a shot of mine..... lol
lots of people have swapped the 3sgte engine and turbod their 5s and 7a but as far as i know there arn't too many real awd gt4's
subaru's STI and evo's began to sell here in 03-04, from the dealer brand new.....so we got the "bug-eye" and the evo 8 first, no previous models, The GT-Four is pretty much illegal to own and operate, but there are a few ways to get one....

Didnt realise it was that serious, just thought it was such a long way for them to be imported, (time/money)
RHD is COMPELETELY LEGAL in the united states...come on now....look at your local postal truck....

Toyota chose not to bring the GT4 over due to a failing market for them at the time. Since they never reported any crash information, didn't have them tested ect.. to meet US specification DOT requirements THIS is why you can't bring one in

If you are a full race team and have that legal status you can bring one over for COMPETITION use ONLY

What do you mean by private importers. What ways are there to get one.....

Out of 2500 GT-Four WRC, 2100 stayed in Japan, 300 were exported to Europe, 77 for Australia, and few to the general markets

My car was impoerted a few years ago direct from Japan, the ones they imported for the u.k were 230/240 bhp, whereas japanese ones are 255bhp. Mine still has original japanese stickers dotted about here and there. Have to get them interpreted i guess!!!!!

1. you can if you bring it in as parts.. like bring the shell with no motor, and then bring the motor separately.
but registering/insuring it is another story.

2. you can use it for off-road use only (ie. show car or competition)

3. there are LHD versions of the gt-four throughout the european mainland (ie: France, Germany, etc)

just you wait, they'll eventually be legal here. and i'm gonna be the first in Canada wink.gif (or make that 3rd...) smile.gif

I cant wait ether, I know of 3 Gt4 here in tassie, becaus their are only 77 real gt4 in Australia that has put the price up to around $24,000 my celica cost me $10k.
one of the three here we belive could be imported but i dont konw how, we got the same 15 year rule.
can not wait to flood the market like those stupid skylines, i can turn a corner with out seing one.

I suppose that is the appeal of the mighty Celica, because they are so rare. Over here in scotland, a subaru or evo goes by every few minutes, where-as celica's are rarer and cause more heads to turn!! Thats why i like them

Not much different here, seems like everyone who wants an easy solution to AWD/turbo goes with an evo or STI, I mean, if 35g's is easy wink.gif
Main reason for GT4 not being sold in US is it not being compliant with US emission restrictions. 2nd gen. 3SGTE was fine, 3rd gen. 3SGTE was not - that's why 3SGTEs available in US are 2nd gen. mainly.

Am I right in thinking that you guys didnt get the 3sge officialy either? If so, was that for emmision reasons also?

Seeing that I can testify from first hand experience both are great engines, I feel for you guys.......... biggrin.gif

i hope they become legal here... i heard that there is a chance that the 15 year rule might change to a 25 year rule.

No, this is not correct. All motors entering the U.S. are fitted with things that other countries don't require; such as the EGR to make them compliant.

The MAIN reason the ST205 was not sold in the U.S. was the dismal sales figures of the ST185.

I was asking about the NA 3sge engine available to the JDM & euro market in the celica/mr2 etc, was this ever available in th US?

He said 3sGE. We had the 4GC GT-S with 3SGE but after that we got stuck with the FE motors.

So when you guys do the engine conversions, (stock gt - 3sgte).... do you take it from the mr2 or get them imported somehow??

Seems to me, Toyota should get a call from U.S DEMANDING the gt4 to be made available!!

there are a few companies in america that can import clips for us. normally most of us use an st185 or st205 clip for our swaps.
