Hello fellow celica owners and/or toyota enthusiats

I've been reading pretty much most of the sticky and interesting posts on this forum and i like to stay the information here is awesome makes me really appreciate my celica more and more.

My 1st question/post is it possible to put an (97-02) jdm camry 5sfe engine into 95 celica GT (stock)? all i do know is that you have to do some drilling in the mounting plate for it to fit. but im not 100% sure.

So if anyone has any insights on this, thanx alot.

Why? a "JDM" 5SFE isn't any better than a US 5SFE... Also... they mount the same.

well it doesn't matter where the engine comes from. its just that i can fine jdm engines for cheaper and with a lower mileage than some us 5sfe.

I got one, only cause my original 5s had over 200k on it and the only way that i could get another low mileage and cheap one would be from japan.

Is the only difference between a JDM and USDM motor the EGR? so, if I wanted a newer replacement engine just cause mine's getting old, if I just re-use my current intake manifold so I can use the EGR, is everything else the same? would it be street legal then?

Yes. It's still the same basic motor... unless they radically changed ports or something (which I don't think they did). The major difference between the 97-2002 motors is DLI... but the physical engine has not changed very much.

i got a 5s out of a jdm 95 Scepter. I reused my oem USDM intake manifold. The only difference between the JDM engine and USDM engine was that the ports on the JDM engine are slightly larger, and i think the compression ratio is just slightly higher..like 0.2 or 0.3:1 difference compaired to stock. I also noticed that just throttel response on the car is a bit different than other GT's and GTS' ive driven. Thats probably just because of the ports though. But yea, i bought my motor for $500 from a buddy of mine who used to import motors. it was a direct drop in because we used all of my oem acessories, sensors, intake manifold, etc.

difference between the 2 also is a distributor and coils. that is one of the only different. we have both a 99 and 2000 camry and a 95 gt. that is probably most of the difference between them. now spec wise i dont know. g/l

i think the 5S-FE is the toyota UDSM engine...

They're all basically the same thing, JDM or otherwise.

All the 5sfe are all the same, except for the 94 and 95 have bigger shims. The mr2oc guys claim that it has 7-10 more hp.

hahaha... because of the shims? The horsepower difference is due to emissions. The shim change was from roughly 1993 ish and the change covered all models till the 5SFE stopped production in late 2001. The change also affected the 3SGE's of the same era... Regardless... the 5SFE will still be a 130-135hp engine. The more I hear people preach about crap from mr2oc... the more I lose respect for those guys.
