Well... i'll be looking for a new laptop for college, i dont want to spent over $1k on it. i dont know much about computers, and i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction of whats the best bang for the buck. i want something reliable, and that will last awhile and i'll be happy with lol. i dont really play video games, but i do want something that can handle the multimedia/internet, but something i can also use for school. if this doesnt make sense lmk, im kinda in a rush atm

i would strongly advise a macbook. its over 1,000 (barely) but is quality stuff.

I'm not a big fan of Macs, but after playing with my girlfriend's ibook, it's really not that bad. You should look into it, and I believe they do student discounts on them too.

If you aren't picky, and the budget is tight, just get a Dell and a warranty. I myself would never buy one, but I also would spend more to get what I really want. Since I left school though, my laptop just sits there because my desktop is a hell of a lot nicer.

Yeah the Macbooks will give you a student discount and I believe there are a couple others that will too. I'm pretty sure dell does, and HP I believe.

lol, hence why I said I would never buy one. I know a lot of people that do have them though. Weren't they the ones with the exploding battery packs?

You're probably better off just walking into best buy and getting something off the shelf if you don't care about what's inside that much. Just get something you like and fits the budget. Just get something from a brand name you can at least identify like HP, Acer, etc.

I build my own computers, so I know what I'm getting is what I want.

i havent looked into macs yet, i thought they were closer to $2k, and i heard that if i have a problem with it, its hard to find someone who knows how to fix it or something.

are you serious about dells though, i thought they were decent, but again i don't know much.

thanks for the replies keep them coming, any specific models you like. i suppose if it would last longer and i be happier i can look into spending a LITTLE over $1k.

depends on the line of macs u want. the macbook is the cheapest of all the mac computers and are just as good really. powerbooks cost around he 2,000 dollar mark but macs cost about half that. best bang for your buck.

the only major complaint i have about macs is their battery life and the batteries overheat and get really hot.

HP gives student discounts, and I get district discount because I work for a school district. We are purchasing a lot of nx6325 laptops from HP. They are a really good laptop. I like them a lot and they're reliable! If multimedia is more your thing then check out he HP 8430 laptop.

I think my next laptop is going to be a macbook though. A guy I go to school with has one that he has running Windows and Linux AND OS X running simultaneously. Very cool!

I say go to Frys, Circuit City, or Best Buy, and just buy the one with the look you like the most.

Inside doesn't really matter as you only use it for internet, video play back, etc. Even a Celeron or a Sempron can do those tasks just fine and that's technologies from like 5 years back.

I don't have any problems with my Dell. Its not bad for the price I paid and I got a pretty good discount.

how do sony vaio's compare? im actually thinking about getting the macbook now...

sonys are nice but really pricey. i have an HP and i love it. personally i don't like vista though. if they have one with xp that is the route that i would go it would probably be cheaper as well. i tried to put vista on my laptop and everything just ran slower.
if you are using it for media, you will want one with a good size hard drive and at least 512mb ram. preferably 1gb. mine was on sale for 750 (800 after tax) at best buy and i love it.

plus if u get the macbook, u get the student discount and a free nano.

Does it absolutely have to be a laptop? You can have a much nicer PC if you go with a desktop. I build custom PC's I know it is much easier to upgrade desktops. Upgrade= nice PC for more than 1 year. Your $$$ goes so much further in a desktop. I have 2 laptops, no wait three and there is just not much you can do with them after a year or two.

As far a mac, the only apple I would ever own is an ipod. You know that you have to have Mac software for everything, much less programs available. There is no, well very little you can upgrade yourself. If you like mac's because the "cooler" interface, just use an emulator or another program to hook up windows. I use a custom XP operating system on all my PC's... way better than Vista. Too many bugs still, and no user control, Vista that is.

If you must get a laptop, just get the cheapest one you can find that will do what you need for the next two years... after that it WILL be obsolete!

had mine for two years nows and still works beautifully

i love my macbook pro 15" but it wasnt no 1000k< laptop.. i did get a student discount though.
