atm stands for automatic teller machine, you can only use it to take money out of your checking account from the atm. not untill u get your debit card (u will probably have to be 18) can you make purchases. dont you get something that describes what it is when you open the account?

If you have a checking account you can get a "debit card" a debit card can be used just like a credit card. When you use it the money will come directly from your checking account. Debit cards will say "visa" or "mastercard" on them.
