Clunking noise in steering - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #50230 10 posts Started by Mangozac
Hi team,

I've noticed lately that my steering is making a funny noise when I pull into my driveway. It happens when the wheel is at full lock. My drivers side CV joint makes the usual worn knocking noise when I go around corners and this noise in the steering is on the same side. The noise when I'm pulling into the driveway is like a couple of clunks as the wheels turn. It also only seems to happen under load (i.e. if I just turn the wheels without moving it doesn't happen)...

Do you guys think it could be the CV or something more sinister? Anything I should check out? Power steering fluid is at the right level. kindasad.gif

It's possible it could be CV joint or your rack-and-pinion. Just my guess though.

Yeah I'm hoping it's not the actual rack and pinion because that sounds like a pain to fix kindasad.gif

Actually, I noticed this morning that it's not only at full lock that it happens and in retrospect it does sound very possible like a problem with the rack. If that is the problem can it be fixed without too much drama like replacing the whole steering assembly?
i have the same situation and i know i dont have a bad cv joint.....so any advice how to remedy teh sound???
98% says its the axle
it could be axel or it could also be strut bearing. I have a bad strut mount/bearing on my passanger side and when ever i turn my wheel hard left or right just b4 full lock, i hear a bad clunking sound. My first strut bearing went bad and was fully seazed and then started cutting into the mount its self.
Well, the first thing to do is fix the known problem [bad CV joint].

If you have a good tech around they could probably locate the noise [if it's not the axle], but if you know the joint is bad why leave it?
IMO fix it and see if the other noise is still there.

Yeah I know I need to get the CV fixed but I just wanted to scope out the problem and see if anyone else had experienced it. Looks like I'll just have to go see a mechanic...

Hi Guys,

I have been going through the same issue for some time now (around 6 months) I had Fulcrum susspension have a look and they replaced the rack end. Issue wasn;t resolved so I thought it must be bearings or cv joint. I had someone else have a look and the rack end was in fact not replaced properly (not seated). Check the left rack end. These are notorious for "popping out". The noise I hear down low is a clunk when I turn the steering. At faster speeds I get continuous rotational vibration when steering is under load. That's my 2 cents, check it out

Hey Swerve thanks for the pointer. I had Pedders to a 28 point check and they said that the rack needs replacing. I'll check out the rack end now because I too am experiencing some nasty vibration (although that could simply be due to my bushes needing replacing)...
