My external antenna is broken(bought car recently). I have a 94 ST liftback, and it appears to have the glass etched antenna.

I was wondering if anyone has switched, and what the procedure is. Also, how is the reception using the hatchback's in-glass antenna?

Do you have any pics of this antenna? I've never seen one on a Celica before. Are you sure it's not your defroster in the glass?

I'm pretty sure, as you can see in the pictures, there is no connection with the defroster lines.

i'm pretty sure that still part of the defrost.

yea i don't think celica's have ever used that sort of antenna...

my celi is a jap import and has a glass embedded antenna, must admit i have never used it, but if u take your stereo and look behind it, u will find 2x antenna wires.
1 for the antenna in rear quarter and a smaller type for the screen atenna.
u mite have to change the connector to get it to work, good luck and let us know if u get it workin..

Wow... never came across my head to study my rear glass' defrost maze.

I've been thinking about this. The Yelli Celi has no antenna/chopped antenna, and when I feel like radio I better be in a damn good spot or else its just fuzz.

If you don't need to use defroster, Heres what you might be able to do:

Disconnect the power lines on both ends(cover/insulate the wires so you don't somehow complete the circuit and electrocute your self)

Run your antenna wire up to one of the defroster "connection points" and solder or affix to the defroster matrix.

Basically this should convert your defroster into a glass painted antenna.

I don't know how reception would be with the large end pieces, and the defroster as the contiguous matrix that it is(antenna is a wire, not a circuit)

There was a black wire with a mono type connector that was plugged into the radio, and there was a square white 4-pin connector coming off the harness with the blue plug that plugs into the radio.

Is this what you remember seeing, or were there two of the mono jack type?

I'll be sure to share any info with the rest of the forum, not many people even know about the glass antenna, would be great for people who want the shaved look for their car.

what I found behind my stereo was 2x mono plugs 1 which is for the powered antenna and another mono plug which is smaller in size than the antenna plug, looks similar to the antenna plug, just a smaller, you can't plug that 1 into the stereo as it is too small, but I imagine stereos in japan would probably have the correct socket. I don't use radio so I didn't investgate any further. hope this helped,

There was only one mono type plug in the dash on my USDM Celica ST, so it may be that the wiring was not run for the glass antenna here. Or is this the power cable for the antenna? My 16404 toyota radio is not labeled like most newer toyota OEM radios.

Does anyone have pinouts of toyota radios? I'm pretty sure the blue six pin connector that plugged into the radio is related to the power antenna(service manual shows a similar/identical plug that connects to the power antenna in the trunk.

The 4 pin connector coming off that blue 6-pin had a blue with red stripe, maybe that will help somebody identify this connector (I'll try to get a pic put up later today)

Im using this antenna, it is actually the AM freq antenna as per my electrician, he did it so I have no clue on how he did this.

Its working ok for the FM but once you go in a tunnel or basement it can't pick it up anymore, just like normal.

Scrap the entire antenna idea and get satellite radio. I just can't recommend it highly enough!

Hey, it's less than a year old! These are the kind of things people need to know! Very unique! I guess I'm just gonna have to do a lot of testing with the multimeter to figur out how to switch the antenna over to the glass (grumbles)
