Sound wasn't the transmission, but still expensive :( - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #50801 13 posts Started by Aus
Just recently I have noticed a high pitched metalic screaching sound coming from the transmission somewhere. The sound is faint (loud music/exhaust probably drowned it out before I noticed it) and only occurs occasionaly but only when downshifting.

I cannot feel any difference in performance but the sound does not sound healthy!

Btw I took the car to mechanic, but as with most intermittent mechanical sounds, it never occured when he was in the car! frown.gif
Any ideas?

It could be your throwout bearing, part of you clutch system. If it only makes the sound downshifting from one gear then it could be in the trans.

Thanks for your info. The sound happens in more than one gear, so it shouldn't be the transmission?

Need more info.

Is there feedback in the shifter? Or does it shift fine but makes the sound?

Anything occur when you hear the sound?

Just putting it out there.. but is there enough transaxle fluid in the gearbox? or is it old oil?
Sorry I havent had much chance to go on the net recently!

It turns out that it wasn't coming from the transmission but from the chargecooler pump most likely. I cant fully confirm this yet, but I haven't heard the sound since changing the charge cooler pump.

The 'check engine' light kept on coming on and I knew that it was related to the cooling system somewhere, and then when I got it checked out, it was 'code 52' and 'code 54'. Apparently the code 52 is knock sensor, and 54 is to do with the cooling system and upon further inspection the pump was found to be faulty. My mechanic told me that the knock sensor problem could be related due to increased inlet manifold temps and this should go away with replacing the pump.

Got the car back last night and took it for a spin and the engine light came up again! I took it up to my mechanic again and the code 54 had gone, but there is still a problem with the knock sensor which is going to be costly to replace!

What I wanted to ask you guys is if it is worth buying a second-hand sensor, or buying a real expensive new one from Toyota? Labour charge is going to be high, so is it worth the risk of a old one messing up and costing me double labour charge?! Also, he said thau japenese import st205s have a different knock sensor than uk st205s due to fuel differences, is this true?

there is no diffrence in knock sensors for the 3sgte, they are tuned to "hear" a certain frequency.
i would definetly try to pick up a working used one instead of the new one, they arnt cheap from toyota!!
if the charge cooler pump was bad, and you continued boosting, i can totally see you blowing a knock senso, for the very reason your mechanic discribes.

Ok thanks mate. Im going to have at look at a few salvage yards for the hope of finding one with the correct sensor!

Btw, would a 1st/2nd gen 3sgte sensor work, or just 3rd gen? I think he mentioned that it was different in the st185s, but can anyone confirm?

your mech seems to be a genius, listen to him
you should try to install the new sensor yourself to save some money. its really easy to do.

I was told it is in an aqward position underneath/behind inlet manifold on the st205

its easy. go under your car and look. they shouldn't charge you more the 30min-1hr worth of work, at most.

are u grinding your gears if u try and down shift at to high of a speed your clutch wont let you shif the whole way in with out the sound of some nice metal on metal =) try down shifting later
