Fuel Gauge Problem - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #51017 19 posts Started by 3SGTE
The other day out driving i noticed after a good few miles, (using some good boost) the fuel gauge stopped moving at half a tank.... Then the fuel light came on a while after. So i put gas in and the gauge went a little higher, but not much. (I guess this means that the fuse must be ok if the gauge moved at all)

So guys, any ideas what the problem might be??
its old, happens to all gas gauges after a while, mines so far off i dont even bother checking it, i just wait till the light comes on. You can get aftermarket ones if your in dire need of it but if i was you id just wait for the light lol
Thanks Redline08, but im the type of guy who hates it when simple stuff goes wrong, i gotta fix it... Any ideas how to fix or should i just take it to a garage??
did you install after market gauge faces? sometimes when its hot they can come loose and stop the needle from moving.

No just standard gauges! Any ideas Stu? Was working fine then just stopped on a journey the other day
the needle could be hung up on something, just move the needle up and down to see if its free, you could also pop the needle off then put it back on.
could be the float sticking on the fuel sending unit located on the fuel pump assembly in the tank

let me know how ripping into your gas tank goes...

lmao
does anyone know how the low fuel light gets its signal? i would have assumed it was from the same source as the needle. i dont see how the fuel level senser in the tank could mess up and you still get the low fuel light.

if it is the actual fuel gauge... you can pick up another gauge cluster at a junk yard. the fuel and engine temp part of the cluster can be removed and swapped without messing with the speed/odometer part.

the thing is since he has a gt4 that part of his gauge is diff then ours cuz that is also where the boost gauge is. parts will be a lot harder to find since it would have to come out of a gt4 as well. that is quite a predicament you have there
i am the same way. little things like that annoy the hell outta me. my car has a few little things that don't work that just piss me off sometimes.

Call me a traitor! See if I care. ;)
Yeah, the same thing happened to me. Only thing is when I installed my new bulbs on my gauge the gas gauge just stays all the way on the bottom even after putting 25.00 worth of gas. It's worrying me alot. I don't want to just run out of gas somewhere someday. Guess I should start saving up for a new gauge...
after a rew days of close observation, i filled the tank with gas and only when it gets down to half a tank, the needle stops moving!!! Does that make any difference??
No clue dude. Like a question, How much does it cost to fill up the Celicas gas tank up? 40? I need to know

I dont want to start a new thread. But as of yesterday, my low fuel light dont turn off. The guage works fine, but the light stays on constantly =\

I have a similar problem where my fuel gauge says i'm empty with no empty light on but I know for sure I have more than half a tank left. Is there another way to fix it other then getting a new cluster (or that section of the cluster)? I too have a JDM cluster.

What exactly is "broken"? Can I take it out and adjust something?

anyone have any tips?

Gas pump with the two sender units (one operates the idiot light, the other operates the level gauge) is easily accessible. Pull rear seat bench, remove highly visible covers.

Simplest fix -- buy a replacement sender unit and, well, replace.

F10 FUEL SENDER
1-2 : APPROX. 3 ohms AT FUEL FULL
APPROX. 110 ohms AT FUEL EMPTY

remove rear seat and access panel, unplug sender, with fuel tank full or close to empty check resistance. if its ok replace guage. or get a resistor around 50 ohms put it in pin 2 (i think) and ground it, you should end up with about half tank reading on guage, if not replace it.

Thanks! Do you happen to know the part number for a sender unit for the st205?

Thanks! I will try this in a few days and post again if I run into any problems
