wide wheels/tires rubbing ... - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #51039 28 posts Started by lagos
just wanted to get some ideas on what people have done to eliminate the rubbing in the rear when using wide rims/tires or spacers. i have 17x7.5 45 offset rims with 15mm spacers. as soon as i put them on, the rears would rub like crazy on the inner lip of the rear fender. i cut slits into that lip and used vice grips to bend the lip up. this helped a lot and got rid of most of the rubbing, however it still does rub ever once in a while. any ideas?

Rubber mallet to knock the inner liner up higher and flatten out the slits that you previously cut.

Replace the 15mm spacer with a 10mm spacer?

pretty much did that with the vice grips already.

what about fender rolling. has anyone tried it on our cars?

so your offset is 30 art?

what size tires are on your rims? 225-45-17?

17x7.5 45 offset rims with 15mm spacers and 225-45-17 tires

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
so u have a total offset of 30 with 225s

that why your rubing

my rims were 17x8 with 225-45-17 with a 35mm offset....and i coudlnt get my fingers between the tires and the fender...ive never seen rolled fenders on a celica, u can give it a shot art. cant be TERRIBLE.

another solution is sell the 15mm spacers, and get 10mm ones to replace them

edit: idk but heres ebay ones:

my offset might be 30, but the rim width is only 7.5in. so i thought i might be able to get away with it.

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
IIRC the smaller your offset, the smaller your offset, the farther out the wheels sit...

i understand yours are 7.5 and mine were 8" wide, but

5mm = .1969"

so...idk, cuz now this makes no sense to me.

i say:

1) try to roll teh fenders, if that doesnt work
2) smaller spacers, that dont work
3) spacers and rolled fenders better....or else

my front and rear have been rolled

Wrap a towel around a bat and jack up the car enough to get the bat between the tire and fender lip... lower the jack little by little while pushing the lip up inside the wheel well and continue to work your way around. Its easy and works fine. You will probably have to touch up alittle cause the paint may crack some if its not hot enough.
You could always try 1. buying camber plates and adjusting the camber, or 2. Stretching 215's or dare I even say 205's on your wheels, but rolling the fenders is your best bet

Now SR powered
I had the same problem.

I have 225/40/18 GoodYear Eagle F1, my current offsett in the back is 28 (Rim = 48 +20mm spacer) Since I knew the paint would crack if not properly heated I went to the bodyshop department of my local Toyota Dealer (the one in charge there was the former owner of my car biggrin.gif ) I let them grind down about 4-5mm of metal and resprayed with black+clear, everything is fine since. It only rubbed on about 1-2mm at most tho. DONT, really DONT grind/cut away further then the spotwelds since it hold 2 different parts together.

BTW tyre brand does matter here, my Toyo's are nowhere near the width of the Goodyear even tho its the same width, the Goodyear's are about 1-1,5 cm wider then my Toyo's. Which caused the rubbing.

EDIT

I looked at your photo's, and you car is really low in the back (compared to mine anyways) Because of this you probably have to roll/cut/grind a lot more then I had to do.

JDM Powerplant installed, BPU coming very soon!
yeah i think ride height and suspension has a lot to do with my issue too. hopefully jester will come through with the pics, so i can see how it looks rolled.

o and if your lowered get rid of your wheel well plastics it helps alot and you dont see it when your lowered anyway

BOOST GETS YOU LAID!!!!
I have a fender rolling tool if anyone else has a problem with their tires rubbing. the tool alows you to roll that inner lip into itself without cracking the paint. PM me if interested. smile.gif
i use to rub cause my car is lowered but i just used a heat gun and a rubber mallet to solve the problem and im running 205 50 16's plus 46 offset.. but now i put on 30mm spacers.. so now im at +16 heres a before picture with out spacers and then i dont know if you can notice with the after picture cause its not really focused on the wheels

just an update. i ended up doing a bit more bending and managed to get 99.9% of the rubbing to go away. if i get my hands on a grinder, and can cut off all of that lip, it should totally fix the issue, but for now its good enough.

prowee do you have any better pictures of the car with the spacers on....the ones you showed basically tell me nothing...
