Car running rich - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #51740 19 posts Started by NaderG
I think my car is running a bit rich , the exhaust has alot of soot or carbon or whatever and when i start it in the morning there is a really heavy smell of gasoline coming out of the exhaust that only goes away after about 20 minutes of driving ... how do it tune the engine to fix this ?
if you don't have a turbo ( which I don't think you have ) yu can try replacing your O2 sensors.
How much should i expect to pay ?

How much should i expect to pay ? , my engine is the 5sfe , it has 2 oxygen sensors one is the primary and the other is added for California emission regulation
O2 sensors are too easy to change, just get new ones and replace them yourself. ( make sure engine is cold when replacing them )
i know how to replace them , they are easy .... i just checked autozone and toyota world , Toyotas are 96$ each , auto zone has a whole bunch of them and they are all over 100 ..... so i should be paying around 200$ .... and i should expect a great increase in fuel millage , i am getting like 24 Mpg and i am not really an aggressive driver , i rarely rev the engine past 4k
I just got back from autozone , they have Denso oxygen sensors but they have to types : universal for 50$ and O.E. type for 150$ , now thats a huge difference and i would like to know which one is better for the money bearing in mind that there is a 50% i will swap my engine next year or the year after ...... toyota wolrd have them for 100$ by the way .....
since i haven't got any answer for this lonely question , i tried looking things up and all that i can conclude is that the OE type has the electrical plug and the Universal comes without it ...... is that the only difference ? and if it is then what is the best way to connect the plug to the wire in a way that will last ?
24 mpg is better than mine! i say leave it alone!
well , it went down this last 2 tanks , its like 21 now !! .... i checked my tires and they were VERY under inflated so i filled up and i hoping for improvement , the car is defiantly running rich , i can smell gas in the exhaust when i start it in the morning

Bump : There are two types of O2 sensors , OEM type and universal .... the universal type doesnt come with the electrical plug , the price difference is like a 100 $ so i'd be saving series $$$$ if i get the ones without the plugs ..... what is the best way to connect the wire to the plugs so that it can last ? of course taking in consideration the heat in the engine bay.
does it feel like it takes the engine along time to warm up? the needle should be at the 1/2 way mark with in about 2 miles of startup. if not, then change your thermostat.

It warms up pretty fast .... my gas millage is kind of lower than usual even though i just done a full tune-up lately .... so i am guessing it is because of the O2 sensor , you know the air/fuel mixture
I am guessing the Universal Sensors will just have the wires running off on its own to connect the cars to. I would just get them then and make sure you solder it properly.

:.....Flush Wheel Fitment Guide.....:
just get a denso first time fit sensor from an online densor retailer. they work as good as stock sensors (which are also denso) and just plug in. no mistakes.

online retailers also sell Denso Universals , for like a 100$ less ... and i was wondering how do i connect the wires to the plugs in a way that last .... the problem is i dont know how to solder....
well, you only need to worry about the upstream sensor. the other is just for emissions. mine was like $50 from denso.com or something. i changed it when i installed the header and wideband, the old sensor had 120K miles on it and was still fine, but i figured since it was cheap i may as well change it.

where are you getting over $100?

online car part retailers and auto zone , kragen and all the other shops .... Toyota world has it for 96$ ....
UPDATE: i recently noticed that the heavy smell of gasoline that i smell after i start the car in the morning is actually coming from the engine bay , its also from the exhaust but the smell from the engine bay is ALOT stronger ... what could it be ?
