Any way to convert manual windows to power windows? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #51840 10 posts Started by GriffGirl
I have a 94 ST hatchback, and among many mods I'd like to make to it is to convert the manual door locks and windows to power windows. Is there any way to do this, really, or would I need to just get new doors all together and then do the wiring?
yeah there is. You need to buy some switches, window regulators, etc.

If you can, hit up a junk yard and find a Celica with power windows and grab everything you can from the doors.

That's kind of what I was thinking... I saw in your profile you did the conversion. Did you replace the inside panels too when you did it? Also, is the wiring a bitch, or is it fairly straight forward?
it may be easier to buy the whole doors and then just do the whole doors but then i guess you would ahve to worry about paint. i kno that at junkyards around here they have some weekends when its all you can carry for 50$ so if 2 people went there 2 doors with everything still hopefully for 100$? just a thought

I kept the manual window door panels, just capped off where the handle was. Wiring wasn't too hard. I routed the switches to the center console.

Brilliant! I can't wait to try it! Now to just find one in a scrap yard... not too common to find a Celica in a yard around here! Someone, somewhere, must have it though...
yeah, call around to different yards before going out. That should save you some time.

This mod was also done on my car by a previous owner, I can take some photos if anyone wants! My experience with it is overall just ok, if only the start-ups wouldn't be so rough. There is some kind of 'clank!' when the motor is started. I just might need to tighten something up though... My windows are loose when they are lowered anyways - I gotta get that fixed soon.

Photos would be great, I'm still thinking about options as to where to put the switches in. It seems like the door panels would be the best option but maybe the center console is more practical, I don't know. When the mod was done to your car, did they do the locks too, or just the windows? My goal is to do the windows and locks at the same time.
Hm well I've got central locking so yes I guess.. smile.gif

I haven't done anything to the doors, so if you think it looks kinda ghetto I totally agree with you tongue.gif

And a short vid of it all in action:
