stock 5sfe 99 GT w/ manual trans (odo. 95,000 mi.) 30-34 MPG

drive 50-65 mi. a day, some highway, some backroads

use to get 30-32 MPG using 89 octane and a bottle of gumout injector cleaner or full fuel system cleaner from time to time / then I tried a different brand of full fuel system cleaner 1 time about 2 months ago and now I consistently get 33-34 MPG on 89 octane

What fuel system clear did you switch to?

I get 25 MPG half highway half stop and go, I try to keep it under 3k RPM's, but sometimes I find myself doing more spirited driving.

my buddy who sold me the celi said he got 400miles off of 87 and 500 off of 93 (1 tank)
yea let me refine my post a bit. i had emptied the tank before, put in 15.2ish of 93octane + oil change(castrol synthetic) and fuel injector cleaner. = 465miles. pushing the car a bit, but mostly cruising to/from school.

things that affect gas milage. engine displacement, air flow, temperature, brake situation (seized calipers = bad), condition of fuel injectors and spark plugs, number of stop/go's, a/c, FI (turbo/super), tire sizes and weights, junk in car, junk on car, etc..

so.. want better gas milage?
displacement: a 1.6l(like netrata..)/1.8l is gonna get better than a 2.2l b/c the 2.2l needs more gas for the higher displacement, nothing u can really do to change that..
air flow: w/a cai/rai you should get better because there is more air flow through the engine and its less restricted.
temp: your car runs better when its cool outside. say between ... 40-70ish too cold and its brutal. too hott and its murder, sorry but u can't change the weather.
brakes: you should avoid riding your brakes and brake sooner when coming to a stop to possibly avoid completely stopping. even the slightest roll is better than a complete stop, so leave room to roll up behind the car in front of you.
fuel injectors: bad/old fuel injectors will kill gas milage, replace them as necessary or use fuel injector cleaner, it does wonders for higher mileage cars.
a/c: running air conditioning means taking engine power from your wheels and moving it to a compressor to keep you cool.. try putting the windows down or just running cool air.
FI: forced induction cars are gonna get worse gas mileage due to the fact that there is more air in the piston chamber and it requires more gas to fully ignite. so.. enjoy the boost smile.gif lol
tires: skinnier tires = worse traction/performance but better gas mileage. less rubber on the road is easier to move. so if you have like 205tires move to 195.. oh and don't forget to check tire pressure.
wheels: lighter wheels will perform better than heavier wheels due to the fact that it takes less force to move them.
interior/exterior accessories: i've been told that for every 100lbs in/on your car you lose about 10hp, i'll look into it but if thats true then the body kit you bought that weights 50lbs more than stock, just wasted you 5hp. and the underbody lights, emergency equipment in the trunk, spare tire, subwoofers, etc.. are extra weight. get rid of these items or minimize them.

wow so thats a lot to digest but thats my general understanding of it all.. if anyone thinks i'm mistaken, plz lemme know. thanks.

I read in a mag. that the rule of thumb was for every 50 lbs = 1 hp.

(the mag had a civic which the guy re-did the whole body in CF and lost 500 lbs in doing so.

My vert gets about 25 MPG when i use shell gas , about 50% city and 50% highway no faster than 70mph, if i use other cheaper gas , i get worse MPG
I get somewhere around 700kms (434miles) on a full tank IF I *try* not to push it. Which is hard, cause the weekend is playtime. Thats on 93 Shell gas.

I should dedicate a tank as an experiment to determine the top fuel mileage I can get with this thing. I'm sure I could break the 30mpg barrier if I don't push it once from full to empty.

(keep in mind what's in the sig)

9l/100km or around 26 mpg combined. SHELL V-Power fuel, 100% synthetic, clean K&N, 150 000 miles on the 5sfe (99GT)
no matter wat i do i get a consistent 21-22 mpg...
whether it's 100% driving in suburban stop and go traffic like a grannie
or 100%spirited driving in suburban stop and go traffic
or 99% highway @ 140km/h
or 99% highway @ 100km/h

I'm averaging 28 mpg overall, which varies between city driving and semi-stop and go highway driving. Just running regular unleaded (87 octane). I get about 35 on open road trips.
Well I went a whole tank for the most part under 3k revs. I might have jumped maybe 5 times, yet i got the same as if I was normally driving, like a maniac.

i dont know what to do but 20 is no bueno for me!

I just averaged 36.4 MPG on my last tank of gas. This was with my friend and I playing with my car in the rain, and driving in traffic. biggrin.gif I dunno how I'm doing it, but it's amazing.

I'll post mine In a week or so, Im at a 1/4 of a tank right now. I just replaced the spark plug's(Bosch dual platinum, wouldve got the quad's but I wa short on cash that day) and the fuel filter about a year+ ago, I also use that fuel Injector cleaner stuff too from time to time. What else could you do to Improve you gas milage? What would you have to replace? New Injector's? Spark plug wire's?

Man, that's not bad at all for a turbo motor, escpecially when looking at what other turbo's have posted.

Thanks bud, i drive mostly on highways, so not much city driving which helps... nobody can resist boosting though!!
i drive winding back roads mostly...i was getting about 27 mpg...shifting at about 2700 rpm...then i started shifting at 3200 rpm...now i'm getting 29.5 mpg...

recently took a trip from oh to va, all interstate, 80+ got 31 mpg...

i think my car is telling me to drive faster

and no, i did my math right

My car has around 161k miles on it. I've only done basic maintenance, spark plugs, oil and filter change (using Pennzoil Platinum synthetic oil), as well as a Toyota coolant flush. The car is completely stock.

My first fill up after I picked up the car from Coomer was something like 37MPG, but now that I am comfortable with the car I don't have to always granny drive. It doesn't matter if I am shifting at 3K, 4.5K, or 7K... always 30MPG.

Pandelica 2.0 in progress.
I put In $40 got a full tank of regular at chevron, 12.3 gallons, drove 400 miles In the city (90% city, 10% highway) So that's 32.5 miles to the gallon!
Approx 530 km's per tank (city)
I get 31-34mpg depending on my right foot.
wow i think i might get around 24 this tank because of the colder weather! ive gone 260 w/o seeing the empty light turn on.
