Auto Vs Manual - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #5257 33 posts Started by tranxendz
What is better? Auto or Manual..of course Manual is the best!

I got an automatic because the auto had lower miles..I want to get a new Celica to just make it manual but the miles are high and the price is overpriced. My girlfriend said if I am going to buy a car why buy another Celica...

Is there any way that I can turn my auto to manual? Instead of buying a new car? Anyone in Southern California that could do it?
yes you can. there have been a few that have done it. it's not too hard, just sourcing all the parts you need is the pain. >tongue.gif>

Is there somebody on this site that has done this converstion? This is something I will also try if it's not to expensive and if it's not going to make my tranny weaker. Anybody know where we can find a parts list for this conversion?

The work almost ain't worth it. I had a friend that did it to his eclipse, and when he finished, he said he just wished that he had sold that one, and bought a different one already with a manual. Its your call though.

Has anyone tried it? I am willing to try it or pay someone to change it for me LoL. Damn I hope finding parts are easy to find. Where should I start? LoL
I just did the swap this summer. Yes, it would have been much cheaper if i had bought a new celi that was manual. But if you are attached to your car, that specific car, as much as i am, then the swap is your only option for fulldriving enjoyment. For me, it was about $1000 in parts and another $1000 in labor. There were a few complications here and there that pushed the price up a bit more, but those are things im sure you wont run into if you source the parts right and know what you are getting.

Here is the list of things you will need (i got this list from Nemesis3S-GTE on celica.net):

-Tranny
-Shifter/cables (junkyard, EXPENSIVE otherwise)
-Flywheel (get it machined if from a junkyard)
-Clutch Master cyl.
-Slave cyl.
-New clutch
-Clutch metal fluid lines (junkyard)
-Rubber clutch line (New from Toyota)
-Flywheel bolts (new from Toyota)
-Pressure plate bolts (new from Toyota)
-Clutch pedal assy.
-Manual brake pedal assy.
-Tranny fluid (the tranny comes empty, don't ask how I found this out )
-Brake fluid for clutch

get everything you can from a junkyard, the toyota dealer is expensive. Try www.car-parts.com, you will find a bunch of stuff there. But somethings like the flywheel bolts, presure plate bolts and fluid lines you can only get from toyota.

there are a few more people on celica.net that have done it besides me. Thats where i got all the info to do mine. Ask around there, they were all pretty nice and very helpful. Feel free to PM me as well, but i had a shop do it, so the only thing i know is how to do is source the parts and find a good shop.

Its Orville's Celica, i just drive it...
Orvillez Celica...whoa man you're descriptive i need to chat with you somemore cause I am attached to my Celica....lol... so you spent 2 g's holy man..lol ok its worth it..

Does anyone else know a shop that can change it in so CALI?!?!? or anything?? I'm desperate here i want to do this veyr soon..

just an idea, but you might want to save up and do a engine swap and the auto/manual conversion at the same time. it'll save you money in the long run. >smile.gif>
I don't really understand why you want to get rid of the auto because if and I do mean if, you learn how to use the auto's "power mode" (assuming you have a celica from '94-'99 with the dual mode automatic tranny) you can out run a camaro or mustang base all day long. But that is only if the person who own the car before you had taken car of it and you have taken care of it.
what is a dual mode automatic?? ive never even heard of that before...and i have an automatic.
i would suppose that he is trying to talk fancy about the o/d button on the side of the shifter.

on is one mode
off is another mode

dual mode.

i always have overdrive off because it responds quicker and doesnt have to change gears. but is that bad for the car in any way?
its not bad to have overdrive on or off. overdrive just puts it in the highest possible gear to keep the revs down. its a fuel economy thing. the name is misleading. if you want to go fast turn the overdrive off, or else youll be able to write a symphony before you reach 100 mph.

you should be more specific then. when people think of outrun etc etc they think of dragging. you are talking about twisty so say twisty otherwise people will think you're just pullin stuff out of your ass. so what if people can't spell? does that have anything to do with anything outside the classroom/report? anywayz cf,rims doesn't really do anything in term of performance ^^ maybe save some weight but that's about it. if you want to run faster put on 13's =D
Goodness...I think all the auto drivers should just stop trying to make there car sound better by saying it has a special button on the automatic shifter. Yea...I am sure an AUTO ST would beat a z28....hahahahaha. I bet. Autos are slower, accept it. Sorry,also....manuals can do that too...it's called downshifting and we can do it all the time not just up in the higher speeds.
Wasn't there just another 3 page thread on this same topic? Okay, the O/D isn't just a "4th gear". It works at every speed. Your car revs much higher in every gear with it off. Sure, manual's may go faster if you have a SKILLED driver. I''m not saying anything about people's driving skills on here, but I'm willing to bet that most people aren't as good as the S**T they talk. I can see teenagers on here grinding through their gears right now. Oh yeah, and neither an auto or manual ST can beat a Z28 or Trans Am. A base V-6 either one can smoke our car unless you've got serious mods. If you beat them in the "twisties" it's not because your car is faster, it's because the other driver sucks! There's no use arguing about an auto or manual in an ST econo-coupe, when the only difference with a skilled driver using a manual is marginal at best.

I'm sorry, I've got to call B.S. on that. There's no way your Celica ST beat a Camaro SS, Corvette, Viper, turbo Trans Am, etc. You've got to remember that this is a celica site and hello, I own an auto ST. I love my car, but it would get SMOKED by those cars in ANY type of race. If this event actually happened the way you say it did, then the people driving those cars are such pitiful drivers that they shouldn't be allowed on the road, and everyone should fear for their lives. Put the same driver in any of those cars and then in a Celica ST and the Celica ST would not even compete. An auto ST doesn't even want to touch 100 mph, I know, I had to push mine to do it. Hell, 40-60 in our cars is like 3 seconds. Those other cars are 150mph monsters. I can't even fathom an ST competing with them. In Gran Turismo racing, those cars would be like A-B class, ours would be like G class. Those are 300-400 hp cars! Putting lighter weight stuff on your car isn't even going to make up that much difference in power/weight. I'm sorry but that story is unbelievable.
i call bs also....And why do you keep brining your boyfriend up...cant you think for yourself. And if your boyfriend barely beat you then he is a Sh**tty driver. The next time you want to fool some people do it somewhere else. 6GC.net takes no Sh*T!!! Now Step!!! >mad.gif> >mad.gif> >thumbsdown.gif>

Stop it... the 94-99 celica is an underpowered sporty car. It has real good handling
and is very nice do drive indeed, but stop comparing with REAL sport cars.
I have a manual 94 GT lighly modified (the more powerful 6th gen you can get in North America) and don't feel much more power than my previous car (lazy honda accord 92 ex). Aint no lame driver too... If you want power and celica, go for the st205 engine. END of dicussion.
STOP>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I know what I did and I know that it was for money and if you don't believe me... Then how is my car paid for when I had 7000 left on it when I started the race...

And also if yal think your cars are so much that then why didn't yal get the CRAP AS* SUPRA like a little baby, oh yah I know why, because yal cheap scapes could not afford it... If yal don't end this soon yal are going to get me and my bf and our palies tick off and any celica we see we will wip its tail from now on...

Thank you
have a nice day...
Mica in devil mode...
And oh yah... The reason I brought a celica st was because I wanted a reliable car so when my boyfriends TTA come and came down with a cold, me and him could still drive around together, Since he did buy his car and paid the down payment on mine... thank you have a f***ing Nice Crappy Cheap Scape Day...
