Does my car have ABS??? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #52814 17 posts Started by k-weaver
Hey guys I was just wondering, how do you tell if the car has ABS or not? I don't have a light on the inside that says anything, like newer cars do, but how do I know?

I was wondering because I think I need to replace my driver side axle and while I was looking it said that some were for cars with ABS and others were for the cars without it. I have a 1996 GT hatchback. Any info would be great. Thanks guys!!!
pop your hood, on the passanger side inner fender beside where you add washer fluid, you will see a metal block with like 10 different lines running into it...if you see that..its got ABS, if you dont, you dont..lol Also another way to check is drive, slam on the brakes, if you feel a pulsation in the pedal and the tires dont lock up..you have it...if your tires lock up completely, then you dont have it.

EDIT: since yours is a GT aswell, you most likely have ABS. I havent seen a GT without ABS.

I have a 97 st limited w/o abs
Thanks guys!!! I'll be sure to pop my hood and check it out.
I got a 94 GT without it.

anyway, we just talked about this in class last night. the quickest and easiest way to tell is just to turn your key to the on position, and most of the lights on your dash will light up, like check engine light, airbag light, check oil light, etc. now, if you see an ABS light, then you have it, if you don't then you probably don't (I say probably don't because, the bulb could have just burnt out, or some other electrical problem could cause the light not to come on... but that's pretty unlikely)

the quickest, easiest, and most accurate way to tell would be to do as valo said.
open your hood, and look for the abs actuator, located on the passanger side frame rail. (for USDM cars wink.gif )

My 97 GT doesn't have ABS. And, I think the easiest way to check would be to slam on the brakes on gravel and see if the pedal vibrates back at you.

We shall show mercy, but we shall not ask for it.
If you want you can just take apart the master cylinder and look for all those abs cylonoids in that big metal box looking thing. Looks like a bunch or batteries.

wtf are you talking about ? take apart the master cylinder to see if you have ABS ? rolleyes.gif

this is the ABS control unit in the bay.

All of the brake lines go from the wheels, to the some splitters, then to that unit, and then to the master cylinder. Trust me, I know.

wait a sec......o nm....im thinkin of sumthing else i was thinking for su reason that the control unit was by the master cylinder. At the time i was reading an artical bout bench bleeding and i probly got my words mixed up. What i ment was, ware the abd control unit is, look inside the metal box thing and look for the cylinoids. Which look to me like a bunch of batteries.
