here's a question - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #5284 21 posts Started by AJcelica
everyone is always asking about the 3sgte swap and about the AWD conversion, but does anyone know what kind of 1/4 mile times the fully swapped FWD celicas pull? also, how much would a completely swapped celica weigh? stock ST204s are famous for their light weight and handling capabilities, but does this still hold true for post swap celicas?

i'm just in a thinking mood today i guess >rolleyes.gif> >biggrin.gif>
the 3sgte does not weigh too much more than a 5sfe, it is the same series block

as for times, i dont know of anyone that has taken a fwd 3sgte celica to a track.

my guess is 14's with a stock 2nd gen 3sgte. but it will depend on the driver, with that much power it will be very easy to screw up your launch

I think a swap would easily do high 13s with a good driver and proper setup. My car weighs 2400lbs right now, I don't think it would be very difficult to maintain that weight in post swap condition. Ask again in 6 months and I'll probably be able to tell you. >smile.gif>
You gotta go reallly really easy at start - the swapped 3sgte's have no LSD and therefore you spin, alot.

ooh, that kinda sucks... i'm all about the fast starts >rolleyes.gif>

sigh... i suppose there aren't any ways around this unless you put super grip tires up front eh?

unless there is a way around this that i'm not thinking of >biggrin.gif>
Did any of the trannies that were mounted up to a 3S-GE(ST202/3 Celica, Curren, Altezza, etc.) come with a LSD? If so, you could probably swap in one of those trannies fairly easily and then you'd be able to get better traction off the line. >smile.gif>

the curren 3sge trans had LSD i believe. and i would say the 1/4 times should be in the high 14s. cuz if you measure it up against a mr2 which does a 1/4 in 14.6. if you take into account mid engine RWD and the 400 LBS weight difference, the 2 should come out fairly even, but i couldnt see a swapped celica winning. of course im speaking with no mods performed to either car besides the 2nd gen 3sgte swap with all factory parts. if it was a 3rd gen swap with LSD i could definalty see a swapped celica taking out a stock MR2t.

Believer, you'll leave her, in leaving them allNo but I don't buy itLike anything you do, as anyone you areCause I'm...Ten Speed, of God's Blood & Burial

i think only one guy in a 6th gen with a st185 motor has done the 1/4 mile.

he pulled a 14.2
14.2 is pretty quick, and I'm guessing that you could break into the 13s fairly easily with that engine and some basic bolt-on mods.

And to AJCelica, I think I got your last email, but I'm not sure what happened to it. Could you maybe resend it to me?

wow 14.2 is quick! and that was stock, just engine swap?

coomer: absolutely >biggrin.gif>
Ask TRD. They made a LSD for 6GC st204's so it is likely they make one able to be swapped!!!

When you swap the 3sgte you'll have to use a different tranny, the 5sfe tranny will bolt up and so will the tranny from the V6 camry. TRD makes a LSD for the 5sfe.
I know a guy that gets 12s. jhull at toyotacelicas.com. He's got a 5th with a 3sgte swap...not a awd conversion.

Don't forget that traction control is a possibility. Its really very simple when using an aftermarket ecu (like the autronic that I'll be going with). Its just a matter of adding some wheel speed sensors and telling the computer whats up.

With traction control thats properly tuned and an LSD a swap will do mid 13s easy. The comparisons with the mr2 are not really valid as it weights a lot more, 4-500lbs more. The general rule of thumb is 100~0.1sec. FWD is a bit of a disadvantage when its not set up right, but it can be made to work quite well. Get some drag radials, spring for the lsd (at least a phantom grip, they're really cheap. Get a quaife if you have some dough), and you're in the 13's deep.

Just because its not easy and cheap doesn't mean its not possible!
I think you will find that a swap with a stock 2nd gen 3sgte will only get you high 14's, if your lucky. The problem is to do with traction. A mate of mine has done a 3sgte swap into his 5th gen celica. Hes done boost, exhaust and filter to the engine,. and has fitted a LSD from a 6th gen celica. And he has around 195hp at the wheels. His best time so far is 14.6. And he averages higher than that. So yeah, you will need either more power, or a hell of a lot more traction to get 13's
