O.K...After getting over the intial shock of finding out that I only need a paper clip to check the code on the check engine light I immediatly got on here to find out what this means. I got a code 71 and looked it up to find out that it means something is wrong with my EGR System. What could be wrong with the system? Is it costly? Should I be worried?

Still can't believe that the paper clip trick worked. lol saved me $80 at the mechanic.

Here's another shocker- all you need is a $.99 radio shack resistor to make it go away!!! Seriously, I'd check the EGR tube/ valve for blocked passages. Also could be the EGT sensor. The sensor is what you bypass with the resistor. Basically the gas flows thru the head from the exhaust, if the tube or passages are blocked the sensor doesn't warm up and it will show 71 in the ecu. It takes two drive cycles to trip the CEL so when you clean the stuff drive it, let it sit then drive it again to see if the CEL comes on. Keep us posted what you find.

thanks for the reply... Well i started it up this morning and the CEL didnt come on till about five min later but it stayed on for the whole trip. Then after sitting there for about seven hours I started it back up and the CEL never came on. I got home and decided to break out the manual and check it out. When I popped the top to the EGR vacume modulator I noticed the filter was pretty dirty and almost disintegrated in my hand when I tried to pull it out. It looked like this...



Looks like it needs to be replaced...Should I? Or just leave it alone because it looks like some people would rather just not have this system because "they believe EGR reduces power output".

I mean i dont really like the idea of something under the hood not working properly.

if you have acess to it, blow air through it..it might unclog it. If not then unbolt the 2 bolts on the back of your intake manifold where the EGR valve is and spray carb cleaner down it. It might brake up some of the carbon deposit. Also, double check all of your vacuum lines coming off that modual. I replaced my modual, EGR valve and cleaned my entire intake manifold thinkin thouse were the problems *some where*, but then found i had a vacuum line unpluged and broken.

just replace that part, better to have it all working. what if a more serious code comes up but you ignore it thinking its just the egr?

I just had the same code pop on me today, and come to find out they offer two different part numbers for the EGR. One for automatic transmission and the other for manual, even though they look like the very same part.

First question:
Is there a difference in the internals?

Secondly, since my Celi was originally an automatic that was converted to a manual which one do I buy, or does it even matter?

hmm tell the parts counter or service dept your dilema, some places are nice and will help out. i mean goto a dealer and ask....and then be nice and buy the dealer part.
