Different Rear Subframe? - 6G Celicas Forums

Since I'm finally getting my exhaust done, and was debating over under/over axle exhaust, I took a look at the rear subframe.

From what I can see is the GT models have a 'holding plate' or somesort on the subframe to hold the suspension arm bolts.

Can anyone ellaborate about this, just curious. Will go to Mr T in the morning to check the EPC.

im not 100% but it looks the same just missing that bracket in the middle of the crossmember but it looks as if it was removed on the yelli celli. ??

It looks like that yeah, but on every ST I've seen (just take a look at the ST exhaust topic) it doesn't have it, and on every GT it's there. (On mine, Lagos, another Dutch GT owner)

oh interesting enough. i never knew that... maybe its some un-needed weight our fat GT's can spare to lose.

or it could stiffen up the rear end for better handling?

have you had any issues with scraping? I've been kicking around redoing my exhaust.. the Greddy one has pretty much seen it's better days and it time to bump it up for the 5sfte project. however I can't decide if I wanna run under or over the axle. thought if I could cut out a little bit of the spare tire area and weld in a new piece of sheet metal I could get 3 inch in there. But if it can fit under the axle that makes life alot easier =)

Guess my ?'s are

what size pipe did you use?
is your car lowered, if so how close does the exhaust sit to the ground?

Im about 99% sure you can get a 3 inch below the axle easy enough.

Well guess we think alike. I also had in mind cutting the spare tyre well to make room for a over axle exhaust. But I did some touring around my town and other city's with speedbumps (We are #1 speedbump country I think) and all considered I think its not that bad to go under axle. I dont think I will hit anything with it.

I have Tein SS suspension on its stock (as delivered) setting with a 225/40/18 tyre (had a 35/18 tyre so its now 1/2" higher from the ground. (The drop the Teins give is about 1,5-1,7"in the back IIRC) I have about 8.5" of clearance from the rear subframe to the ground. So that will give about 5.5"of clearance which I will think is enough.

I don't even think mine comes close to touching while I go over speed bumps. I'll see if I can park over the top of one and then take a picture to show clearance.


The main thing to remember is that when the shop is doing the exhaust, make sure they mock it up while the car is on the ground. Most places will put the car up on a lift and then fabricate the exhaust... this causes a problem. The rear suspension is extended all of the way down - they mock up the exhaust to hug up under this - they then lower the car and now wonder why they have 4"+ of a gap between the frame and the piping.

But 1 thing, what if you lift the back of the car (doing some maintenance, changing tyres etc). The suspension arms will hit the exhaust and put stress on it. Or would that be resolved by removing the rubber exhaust hangrubbers and let it rest on something? Not that I'm planning on doing much work on the back that requires that much effort but still.

Yeah, thats what I have done. If it needs to go up they just detach the hangers and lower the piping down a bit, then tie it off to the hangers with some wire.

that sounds like such a PITA.
I believe that's just a bracket. The support frame itself isn't different.
