illegal to smoke in a car under 18 - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #54410 8 posts Started by axelrduvirage
Nova Scotia legislature has just yestersday passed a law that bans smoking in vehicles when there are persons under the age of 18 present. Please comment as we are having quite a virulent debate over this at work (Radio-Canada / CBC). Here is a link (not very complete) to the new amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act in Nova Scotia:

Its an enclosed space, so I can see the rationale. In the UK a law was recently passed banning smoking in all public enclosed spaces and workplaces including all company vehicles and bus shelters. It is still legal to smoke in ones own home and private cars but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't pass a law within a few years, making it illegal to spoke in private enclosed spaces when there are minors around.

I think with all the laws being passed limiting were you can smoke, they will slowly but surely get to that point.

I think it's a brilliant law and one that should be enacted here in the US. As a VERY recent former smoker (I just quit October 22nd, yay me!) I still at least had the good sense to not expose people around me to my second hand smoke. I can't STAND it when I see idiots smoking in their cars with the window cracked a hair and a little kid in a car seat in the back. It's one thing if someone chooses to smoke, but that choice should NOT be forced upon those around you.

It's already been proven that there are direct correlations between early exposure to second hand smoke and asthma and other health problems that plague children. Children can't just get up and leave when they are put in harm's way by inattentive or idiotic adults.
