engine knocking - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #54887 27 posts Started by jcaron9gt4
well, as the title says, my engine has been knocking recently. It only does it once in a while, not all the time. Mostly only on startups. however, it also does it when i come to a light, or stop sign...etc. Also when i come to a stop, my oil light flickers sometimes and my rpms drop to like 500 then rise to normal. I check my oil all the time and never let it get low. So i have no idea why it comes on, but the knocking is what's really scaring me. Does anyone know what can be checked to figure out the problem. However all this has been leading me to believe that my engine is on its way out. frown.gif
btw, i posted in here because its turbo'd, someone can move it into the engine forums if need be...any help/advice will be helpful.
mines not turbod yet and sumtimes it knocks, every once in awhile. my engine has been rebuilt too, with maybe 20k miles on it. i dont kno wat the issue is, but its not scaring me greatly.

You say you don't understand how we go dumb, but have you ever been where i'm from?-=-] Livin it in tha bay's a lil different [-=-
Should check your oil pressure.
probably a spun bearing in the connecting rod caps

i second that, killed two 5s's that way and once the bearing goes you can just scrap the motor cuz it'll take the crank with it

drain your oil, and look for shavings in it.

i second that idea..

94' ST Coupe - 5sfe Motor swap and brake swap.
last time replaced the oil pan, there were tiny shavings in there...but i hadnt cleaned the pan since i bought it online so i thought they might have been flakes already in there. Cylinder wall im guessing?

could be cylinder walls but highly unlikely. metal shaving/ particals in the oil, is probally either your rod bearings or main bearings. although i had metal particals that were cuase by my turbo failing.

joes engine is in ok condition, it ran fine. i wouldnt turbo it, tho, it does have quite a bit of miles on it.
if you can afford to swap, go for it man, you know you have help if you need it.
then again, you can have a built bottom end done for ~ 2k if you really wanted to go that route.

thanks man....do you know where i can get an engine with low miles, or fully rebuilt. everyone always says how cheap you can get them, but i cant seem to find any.
also, has anyone heard anything about JIS and their rebuild parts?

if your looking for a low mile engine, call around asking for a 98+ celica or camry motor.
you'll pay more up front, but you'll get a better motor, with the metal headgasket.
dont rebuild the motor yourself if your planning on turboing again.
you'll regret it.
www.mtbuggies.com can do the whole shortblock for you, with forged pistons, 3s rods,( they machine the 5s crank rod journals to accept them, which eliminates the weak point in the 5s motors (rod bolts), ect., for ~2k.

alot of places online are stating that the 3sfe is the same as the 5sfe except for the motor mount position. i know this is not true though, whats some of the main differences between the 2, other than the displacement change...2.2 to 2.0l

DO NOT buy a 3sfe to replace the 5s.
less displacement, older motor, are just a couple of reasons why.
stay away from that ebay crap, justin.

well i hope your not talking about that hissing sound, thats just cause i got a little to close to my belt

Take an engine bay vid while you are reving the engine up a few times.

The first video sounds normal, like a normal sound you hear when your motor wants to stall out (like yours does). The 2nd video sounds worse .... kind of like a bearing issue, but its impossible to tell for sure until you rev it up.

Go change your oil. Take off the oil filter and cut into it. You should see some metal shavings inside the oil filter. Take pics of the filter and post them up.

nope, i'm not talkin about the hissin sound smile.gif

just changed the oil and nothing in the oil that came out...no metal shavings or anything....idk how to cut open the filter lagos, but from what i see, it was just oil in there, tried to rinse it out with water and nothing but oil res. came out.
Use a small hand saw, a knife or a pipe cutter. Its kind of like cutting open an aluminum can. Then you can examin the actual filter inside and see whats stuck to it.

alright, i finally got a chance to cut open my filter today, and nothing was in there but oil. I had my buddy at work take a look at my car and listen to it, and he said it might also be a noisey lifter. But anyways, he has a compression tester so i should be doing that soon and see whats really going on. The thing i dont get is that wouldnt i notice the difference in power if something was majorly wrong? I mean, my car seems like its running strong as ever. I just dont get it. kindasad.gif
Buy yourself a 10$ stethoscope from a car parts store. Youll be able to pinpoint the location of the noise.

Alright, finally got a chance to check my compression today and had some solid readings of 200 200 205 210. The difference should be no more than 14psi if i am correct. So i'm hoping this means that my engine is still fine and can sustain boost for another summer. Just a little update wink.gif
