Considering a switch to a MR2 - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #56301 29 posts Started by nyawton
Thinking of this for a few reasons,

Im soon to be starting a new job that would involve a hell of a lot of parking in tight spaces, right now i aint too clever with the length of the celica bonnet.

Im considering trying to get a 2L turbo T-bar MR2 . The seconds shape model.

What are the pros & cons of doing this?

Cheers

pros- better then a 6th gen(except for cargo space =[)
Well, there have been a lot of people that have gone from the 6gc to the mr2 but I have never heard the "parking in tight spaces" rationale before.

I think the main reasons would go like this (not necessarily in order):

Power
RWD (traction)
Exotic Looks
Mid-engine (handling)

QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
i just don't like them because of 2 seats..

Hehe wink.gif you got me! its a lame excuse to swap to something a bit more beasty i guess. only ever take one passenger, No need for shopping etc. insurence dont seem to be a great deal more & from what iv read they go like stink. Didnt realise there was a non turbo model though! Dont want that one lol !
they are hella fun to drive but alota people crash em due to their short wheel base but they look pimp with the border body kit on the front..uhmm droollll.
I have 3 and i'd say it feels a lot more sportier, also very nice with the t top down. biggrin.gif But I still love 6gc

Well, the MR2 is a full two feet shorter. That's a lot. But there are some occasions that require that rear seating. And Celicas are still shorter than most cars. But for a 2-seater, there are so many great choices besides the MR2. Miata? Porsche!!? All things considered, I'll stick with the G6 Celica convertible.

miata better then an mr2?
the miata is smaller than the mr2 but not in any way better than a mr2. i say go for the mr2 turbo if you will. i had one and it was a blast. still miss it after owning it for only 2 months. fast, exotic looking, and gets a lot of attention because a lot of people dont see it as often. and insurance should be cheap. when i had mines i paid 61 dollars a month - at 20 years old.
if you want to go a cheaper route, why not a mr2 v6 ;D.

mr2 turbo is def. better than a 6gc. even if your 6gc is 3s-gte swapped...you still wont be able to put the power to the ground as effeciently as an mr2. i'm rebuilding a non-turbo mr2 to go along w/ my celica gt right now, and plan on autocrossing a bit (seeing as that's the only thing NA mr2s are good at) - then swap a 3vz-fe in it wink.gif
So far my cheapest Quoat is £1450 TPFT, aged 21 with 1 years no claims. Im just getting my celica ready for the sale now, looking like ill need about 2 k for a decent Mr2 turbo,, Ill keep you posted
good luck! mr2s are awesome!

Pandelica 2.0 in progress.
Just watch that early model ['90-92?] tail whip happiness - I've seeen many a friend's MR2 in a ditch cause of this. Nice to say tho - a 5S 6GC has just the right amount of torque to pull one out biggrin.gif
Good cars otherwise and fun.

for the 91-92 just change out into the 93 suspension specs and you won't get that whip snap crazyness

Glucky finding a mr2 for 2k here, they normally range 5k+ for a good one.

O nvm you're in the UK. Happy Hunting!

Well I used to have an MR2 SW20 (which is the model you refer to). It was a great drive, especially as the engine is right behind your head! Sadly, I lost it on an icy road and wrote it off! I'd owned the car for 3 years and was always cautious of the rear end but inevitably I lost it!

When I had my MR2 I used to joke about FWD cars saying I'd never go back to one but I can honestly say my 6GC has won me over.

At the end of the day, it's down to personal choice.
whats wrong with you guys??? how can you even think of swapping a 6g for anything else?? traitors! lol

I could , but from what i can tell they are a bit expensive, for some reason insurence is higher too, Also i like the fact of the MR2 being a bit smaller, Just looks a lot more sporty smile.gif
so then.....do it biggrin.gif Make sure to post pictures though with whatever you end up getting wink.gif
I say do it, too. I love my 6G, but the MR2 is even more fun to drive, plus I prefer a RWD car. I've looked at "Mr. 2's" quite a bit and the only reason I don't have one is that I still have use for a back seat.

Besides, in the grand scheme of things, do you really need a reason to do what you want to do?

arent all mr2 turbos in the uk imports?

anyway, if you cant park a 6gc i.e. manoeuvre at <5mph what the hell you doing buying a turbo'd car?! tongue.gif

i sold my 6GC for a bmw z4 and regretted it, i sold the z4 and i now have a MR2-Spyder... its freakin fun to drive it, its not the fastest thing in the world but the handling is awesome, i was gonna get a MkII Mr2 but i dont care for power, i care more for the fun factor, in a straight line the mr2 turbo is faster but on a windy road the Spyder will run circles around it, whichever path you choose it'll be great.....i do miss my 6GC though...

mr2 are sexy!
i have seen the 2002 i think and they look awesome,,, and its weird to see one,,,
i would really like to have one of those, but no one seems to sell them as often as the celicas,.
but yeah, there are also cons
sometimes you really need that extra backseat,
