Ok i'm just ready to put my system in(2 12" kicker L5's) and all im looking for is a cheap sound dampening product that i can use in the trunk so it doesn't rattle my car. i dont wanna spend $50-100 on dynamat or fatmat when i can get same results with something much cheaper. now i heard corkboard is just as good. if there isnt anything else i could find at home depot i'll probably use that. list what u used to sound dampen ur trunk and any other good materials or tips to use on when doing my trunk.

Your trunk rattles because the "Brace" or "frame" of your trunk viberates aginst the outter "panel" of the trunk. So by insulating the area where they meet, or will meet, You've killed the rattle.

Dynomat is for sound reflection.

There are three ways to do any project, the right way the cheap way or the wrong way.
If you cheap out and use fleece and corkboard you might get good results(ahs anybody ever actually done this?) But that method isnt really a proven science other wise companies like dynamat and fat mat would be doing it.

There arent to many wrong ways to do this project... any extra material back there will absorb the sound waves, wether it is cork fleece cardboard or down feathers...

There is a reason dynamat and fatmat are used by the pro's... If you want to get the best results save up a little bit more and use dyna or fat mat...
If you cheap out now you might save a few buck but you might have to redo it later, or if you want to use the real stuff later you'll have to rip all the old stuff off to put on the new stuff which is just more time and money wasted

dynamat basic trunk kit is 150...extreme is 170... it has less sq ft than fatmat, but is a thicker product

Sorry i dont have any cheap solutions to your problem... but i dont really believe there are any cheap solutions...

Dynomat does reflect sound. It is not possible for that flemsy foam sheet wraped in shiny foil to stop all & massive amounts kinetic energy. Your box vibrates your Entire car, this matte isn't going to stop that. It is psychically impossible.

It does, however, help.

I think legit94 is recommending this based on much larger applications; or commercial application. And he is 100% correct in advising you as to the *PROPER* way to do it.

I'm giving you a peice of advice that works for me who has other obligations; and cannot afford 150-200 bucks on insulation.

You know the reason that it vibrates- hence Rattles. You can make your own conclusion on how to fix the problem

I once bought this auto insulation stuff that goes under the carpet in your car to deaden road noise on a VERY noisy '87 Pathfinder I once owned. It cost me 20 bucks for a roll of it, which was adequate to line the front seat floors with, and it worked pretty well, It's got some fiber composite stuff on one side and foil on the other (to shield heat). It did great.

Maybe this combined with that spray-on black rubberizing stuff might do pretty okay?

Dont get me wrong, the stuff works great! that's why it cost so much, And if that is the effect that your going for then that's even better; go for that effect.

As for me, i just wanted to make it stop banging. I drive a convertible so a hardcore sound system setup isnt really practical, if i dont loose it one direction, i'll just loose it another. There is NO compression in a convertible. lol. So there is no reason for me to direct the sound.

I'm just answering the question of how to stop the thing from rattling.

For goodness sakes, red94celicast just use the dynomatt, it's the only thing that will work apparently.

I have the same problem...and little time to spend right now. Might be a project for this summer. Let me know how it works out for you and what materials you used, if you deside to go throw with it!

there are a few cheap ways and that is to take a trip to your local lowes or homedepot and look for a roofing product called peal and seal it is the same thing as fat mat and is really cheap, also protecto wrap has a buytal product called protecto wrap hip and ridge tap which can also be found in some places the peal and seal is asphault which is not the best but it will get the job done

yea what rattles in the rear? i feel like everything behind my rear seats makes too much noise every time i hit a bump. suggestions? problem areas?

Other members are also using a shielding technique to prevent the sound wave from ever reaching the "brace" or "frame" so that it never gains enough kinetic energy to really vibrate against the outer panel.

Apparently choice number 2 is popular stuff. Choice 1 is for poor people.

Any other noises can be related to items you are storing in your car. a nano-decibel may be accounted for with the trunks plastic/carpeted covers. But you shouldn't be able to hear those in the cab of your car; especially if they're attached well.

One other thing to look for would be your Jack. make sure that it; and all components are secured.

It is also possible that you have something in your spare tire bay. But provided that you do regular car cleanings, than it shouldn't be an issue.

I used duct tape all around the back side of my plates. All i have back there is a bazooka but it has a good bump to it and i used to hear a rattle and my neighbor told me to use duct tape. Cant get cheaper than that

Use protecto wrap. product is called protecto seal 45. Same thing as dynamat but a fraction of the cost. You can go to home depot and buy it in the roofing section. Any roofing and gutter tape will work as long as it has aluminum backing and tar on the other side. Make sure you use a degreaser to clean the surface before you apply it. As far as filling the gaps in the trunk lid, use expanding foam. Buy a can of "Great Stuff" expanding foam. Fill everthing that is hollow in the trunk lid. Make sure you use gloves cause the foam doesnt come off your skin for a month or so. The trunk didnt rattle anymore though. PM me for more info.
