Ok the brakes on my friends 98 celica gt are weird... before we replaced the pads, there was a nasty grinding sensation, even after they got new pads on there, the nasty grinding thing is still there... the rotors are new and good shape... a friend of mine looked at the calipers and said the master cylinder may be going out... what you guys think?

when they had the brakes apart... the clips inside... well one of the clips was missing and the otherside didnt have clips... could that have anything to do with it?
Uh.. If you're missing 3 out of 4 clips, then what are holding your brake pads in place?
good question! but its weird the people who were installing the brakes said the clips didnt do anything. i dont know anything about brakes so i dunno
Could be the clips or the pads. I've gotten a pair that just had a bad tab on the edge. But if your missing clips then i think its safe to assume that you kinda need em!!

Yes - you need those clips. What you don't have to have are the squel shims [but you have to keep an eye on the pads that way]. IMO - keep and maintain every part on your brakes - cause they all have your life in the balance.

What about your rotors are they in good condition, any warps? Pads might not be evenly aligned, could be part of the clip that is missing.

did you do the front AND back brakes? On what car is this - I thought you didn't have a celica, your friend did. And lastly, are you in Oregon or not, and if so, where did you get your brakes done, so I don't go there!
i dont, my friend does, i'm doing this for him because he doesnt know how to spell or type very well... i'm guessing clips, the one that doesnt sound right is the one missing the clips... but could it be the master cylinder?
Process of elimination would be to replace the missing clips first. Take the car back to whoever did the brakes and make them do it right.

Why do brakes squeal or squeak?
Brake squeal is the result of a high-pitched vibration of the brake pads. This vibration occurs because the pads are not properly insulated from the caliper or secured to the caliper. Brake pads come from the factory with anti-rattle clips, pad insulator shims, and sometimes a silicone backing that literally glues the pad to the caliper to keep the pads secure and to prevent rattle or vibration.
