Headlight Lens removal help please! - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #56739 13 posts Started by Rymaster
is it possible to remove the lens from the brightlights without totaly destroying the lens? Cause I got brights, one with a bad lens and one with a bad casing, i just wana take the lens off one and switch it onto the other one. I tried practicing removing it on the lens that was already broken, but i couldn't do it without cracking the lens even more. I don't want to mess up on the good lens, tongue.gif

is this possible or am I just going after a lost cause?
help anyone?

Pop the entire headlight assembly into the oven. Keep checking it. Once the black rubber stuff starts getting soft, take out the headlight and use a putty knife and pry it off at different points.

thanks, ill have to try that biggrin.gif

any certian degree or time that anyone has done from past experiences?
I have used 2 different methods before.

Stovetop Directions: I used a large pot of water and heated it to a boil. You do not need a lot of water as the highbeam will take up space in the pot and the water will surround it. Hardest part is finding a big enough pot.

For the oven: I preheated the oven to 350 degrees for 15 minutes. I placed the highbeam on a 12x16 cookie sheet and placed it in the oven for a 30 seconds at first. Removed it and checked the condition of the glue. Put it back in the oven and made judgement from there (or until golden brown laugh.gif jk). Just keep an eye on it. When it is heated thoroughly, remove it from the oven and place it on a counter top or table. Slowly peel back lense (careful it's hot) and enjoy. smile.gif

the oven way can warp or melt the housing and that's bad.

easiest and safest IMO

boil water, insert high/low beam

wait 5 minutes then pry glass from housing (remove clips)

takes about 5-10 minutes. To replace glass, use a silicone glue and put the clips back on to hold it tight while it dries.

does it work for all headlights the same?

Is there a way to polish the glass

Also, I'm guessing it's important to let your headlight come up to room temperature if you live anywhere cold, as putting cold glass in hot water will crack the glass.

x2 on the polishing of the lenses, where does one have this done? And how much does that cost?
well i did the lights
the oven trick worked like a charm, biggrin.gif
