performance clucth - 6G Celicas Forums

I need a new clucth and i was wondering what performance clucth should i get. What would u guys recommend me
A stock one for the simple reason it is the cheapest and easiest thing to replace in the drive train. certainly nothing more than a Stage 1 or 1st step up from stock. I learned this the hard way years ago. If you beef up the clutch, the next weakest link is the axles or the transaxle itself. If you are driving really hard and something has to give, better the clutch slips a little than a broken CV or worse.

Put a heavy-duty racing clutch in my old 64 Falcon Sprint V8 4 speed, kid I sold it to proceeded to grab 2nd gear real hard during a drag race, ripped 7 teeth off a 9" limited slip ring gear, (but the clutch didn't slip!)
I still didn't learn, put one in my 67 Mustang fastback with a later model 302 4 speed, also had a 9" limited slip. guy that bought it broke the transmission in half the 1st night he had it. had about 200 ft of rubber on the street in front of his house, banged 2nd gear, another few feet of rubber and then all kinds of marks in the road where the trans case tailshaft broke and the driveshaft beat hell out of the road and the bottom of the car, (but again, the clutch didn't slip!) The Mustang would run mid to low 13's in the 1/4 mile, not bad for 2 valve heads, carburetor and breaker point ignition,,,

Just not worth it for a street driven car IMHO. The heavier ones also are more of a pain in traffic with the heavier pedal pressures, Maybe a Centerforce stage 1 pressure plate and disk if they have one to fit,,,

I was thinking of getting a stage 2 act clucth would that be good or bad
I would suggest a stock clutch. Esp if you are running a stock engine setup. I decided to go with a stock clutch for my V6 setup after reading about all the people who have reported issues with aftermarket ones. Rattling, breaking parts, pucks etc etc etc. Why go to that trouble when you could have a nice, quiet, reliable, stock clutch?

I asked the same question and ended up deciding on an Exedy OEM clutch. I'm putting it in this weekend, so I'll let you know what I think. I've never felt this thing with a new clutch in it!

I considered Exedy Stage 1 or ACT SM00 (I think) basically their stage 1. For the added cost, I couldn't justify it. Unless you're making 250HP crank, I can't see the need for it. As revski says, you'll end up with wheel hop when your wheel-to-road torque capacity is less than your clutch disc's.

What engine do you have? I have the 3SGE and Exedy don't make a clutch for this engine! Although Ebay will tell you different - DON'T get a clutch of Ebay!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 7afe, but I'm pretty sure Exedy makes all the OE celica clutches. Also, most of the 4 cylinder clutches are exactly the same part. Exedy KTY18 I think is the part number for the 1.8L engines, and KTY11 for the 2.0L engines.
For Stage 1 products, part 16800 fits the 1.8L engines, and 16803 fits the 2.0L engines, including the 3sge.
does anybody know a website for act clucthes i saw a link here once but i cant find it
I don't know about for those clutches, but Dr. Tweak is an authorized retailer for some really excellent performance clutches...

You should PM him or go to his site, phoenixtuning.com.

I'll say this - I've used ACT clutches my entire life as a tuner and I've not had one bad experience just hella grab reliably - always.

avoid spec like the plague btw, i hear of alot of spec clutch failures...an unreasonably high amount. they had a batch of stage one clutches out with bad rivets for a while, but i hear of other things failing and breaking on them often.
