VERY Dissappointed with the Celica.... - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #57108 58 posts Started by Badkarma
well, i bought the celica with hopes of getting Much better gas mileage than my other car. 1999 mustang 3.8 v6 5 spd. so i filled it up last week, set the trip, and today the trip meter hit 280 miles and i was due for a fill up. well, it took 14.4 gallons. it comes out to about 19.5 miles per gallon. my mustang gets 21 average! i've gotten up to 30!. this really was quite a let down. i still love the celica but is everyone getting such horrible mpg?
maintainance is kept up. runs great. plugs, wires, filters. only thing i can think of is it needs of an alignment. what else could be the problem?

thanks, sorry for knocking the celi's.

look at ur right foot, theres the culprit

its a four cylinder, slow acceleration, keep it below 3k rpm... and dont bring it above 60...

thatll save u alot of gass.....

i refused to admit to this untill i tried it for a whole tank keeping it under 3000 rpms and i got great gas milage....
over 400 to the tank i that makes a diff to u....

I have a 93 GTS with the 2.2 and I get about 25mpg highway, maybe 28 if I really tried but I can't help passing everyone on the road when I'm driving it biggrin.gif . I have a 99 Rav4 with the 2.0L verison of the same engine and even though it's a brick moving through the air I get about the same milage out of it.
lol i get about the same mpg and i have a st >_< but i like to keep the rpms up so its my own fault keeping it below 3k i got 450-500 miles on a tank but what funs in that?

I drive an ST with remarkable mpg and I was gonna say the problem is you got a GT......lol.....
its all about the style of driving....
drive to ur cars abilities, not urs.... lmao
it dissapoints me that the celicas mpg goes down soo much with speed......
worst point of the celica
even more than the cup holders....
my stepdads vette gets better gas milage than my car in just the sole reason it doesnt have to work as hard to get up to speed.......

Theres no way you are getting only 19.5 mpg. Dude, put your right foot in check hommie.

i got to agree, its the right foot and the weight in the car, how many people et in your car. i would fill up my tank with 35$$ and it would take me from phoenix to vegas with still 1/4 tank, but i guess cruise control kind of helps with that
replace your primary 02 sensor. You should be getting at least 24-26 with a GT.

grr ^^^ gota get technical with it dont u^^^^ just say right foot....
lol^.... I was going to say O2 sensor too, but just can't imagine a celica having only 19 mpg, due to a bad o2 sensor.

have you changed your spark plugs, oil, and air filters?
maybe that would be the problem
I get about 25-28 mpg. I drive fast and have the rpms running high and still get good mpg. I usually drive 40% city and 60% highway. I cruise @ 80mph @ 4k on the interstate and still get 25-28mpg. Your right foot must be made of lead bro. Even if you drove 100% city, your mileage shouldnt be that bad.

1999 Celica GT Hatchback
I drive in houston traffic EVERYDAY.... I got better gas mileage in the celica than I do in my acura TL.... I gotta agree with everyone else 25-28..... I took it to the track every friday so factor that in with the daily driving. On the week where I went downtown and drove houston traffic all week then ran the 1/8 mile all night friday and then went to baytown and ran the 1/4 all night saturday I averaged 22mpg racing all night 2 nights in a row on the same tank. So you seem to be used to a tad bit quicker acceleration and hence have a heavier foot on the take off. That is where you will burn a lot of gas. On the initial "dig" away from the light you flood the engine and dont burn off a lot and hence waste a lot on your leaving the stop signs/ lights.... idle away a bit let it catch then accelerate.... dont just jam the gas away from the stops. Like everyone is saying.... Put your right foot on a diet and you will see miracles happen with your mpg...

what about your tires and tire pressure? those could really skew your mileage. also A/C, stop and go traffic, lotta weight in the trunk or cabin, arco gas.....
its hard to admit, but i have to say the 5sfe is probably the worst engine ever made(exaggerating but it does suck muchos). it has roughly the same horespower as a civic ex or integra gs/rs. yet its like 0.6 liters bigger then the civic, and 0.4 liters bigger then the integ and it gets much much worst mpg then any of the above.
Okay, there are a couple of things to consider. First, as many others have said, is driving style. Of course, I lean pretty heavily on the gas pedal and I average 25-26 for my everyday city/highway combination in my GT. You mentioned having maintenance done. Does that include the O2 sensors that others have mentioned, but also the fuel filter? Also, tire pressure is a factor as was mentioned as well. You did not say what type of transmission you have, but I'm going to assume it's a 5-speed. Further, the type of fuel you use can make a difference. The 5sfe requires only regular unleaded (old farts like me recognize this as the oxymoron that it is) and despite what many may tell you, going to premium gas will not help and sometimes can hurt the performance of the engine if it's not specified as the fuel of choice. But the biggest thing to consider right now is that you based your fuel consumption/economy on one tank. Keep your mileage and measure your fill-ups for five tankfuls and then see what the average is. Especially with this being a car that's new to you, neither of you are used to each other; allow some time for your own personal break-in period.

get a Full Tune Up your car (plugs, wires, o2 sensor, ect.); and a Full Tune Down on the right foot. and spray it with some sea-foam or cleaner chemicals while your at it.

x2, and dont' forget to put a fuel additive afterwards. You should see a nice increase in mpg. Also check your airbox or air filter
hey, I only get 17-19 mpg... but my car is turbo.

check your tire pressure for sure. OEM spec is 33 PSI, but for slightly better milage, you could run them a little higher like 38 PSI or so. other than that, everyone has covered everything else you need to know. if your car is mechanically in good condition it should get better milage. GT's are rated for 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Definitely dude.... you should be able to get better than what you are getting

One thing i love about my st...... stomping on it and riding her hard, i still get 400-500 mpt before having to fill up(depending on if it's all highway or if its a mix)

either there is something wrong with your car or something wrong with your foot. i drive 60 miles a day, in a GT, in Houston, and i only fill up once a week, and that also includes BS driving. last i checked i was getting over 350 miles on a tank and that was with a bad VSV, plugs, and wires. LOVE THESE CARS!
my 7afe hits 5000 rpm's at least 15 times a day no joke....i get mid to high 20's easy but the car is burning oil now wonder why..... lol on a trip to like MN or some were i can just cruse at 65 i can pull 30's no problem
