Updating Forum Software? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #58246 28 posts Started by Coomer
There have been some concerns regarding speed and performance on the site, and I've had some personal concerns regarding security, scalability, and stability. Also, it's usually cool to have the latest version of software that includes new features and such.

So I'm considering upgrading the 6GC forum software.

However, this is not such an easy thing to do. I have tons of custom work invested in the current version of the forums. Also, the database structure has been heavily modified to accommodate integration of the forums with the rest of the site.

The biggest hurdle that comes to mind immediately is the user reputation/feedback system. This is a very custom piece of work and would require a ton of work to get it integrated into a new version of the forums. What do you guys think about not having it immediately integrated into the forums after an upgrade?

Benefits of the upgrade include higher performance and more stability, as well as tons of new features. But for a while, the boards may be bare and lack some of the current custom functionality that you guys are used to. Also, there will be probably 8-12 hours worth of downtime.

What do you all think? Would you all like to see an upgrade?

New Toyota project coming soon...
Personally I think the site is great as is. I haven't experienced any slow downs or whatever. But if you feel the security isn't what it should be then you know best.
Just wanted you to know some of us are happy with all the modding you've done to our site biggrin.gif

Honestly, this is already the hottest thing on the net in my book biggrin.gif

Although it'd be nice to have more smiley's.... But that's about it... I have heard some people complaining about load time and performance though...

I'm greatful for what i already have personally. If you think it's for the better than go for it.

If it makes the site better, and you think it is worth all of the time you'll be investing. Definitely. smile.gif

What Death said..The site is running really well as is, but if you think it would be more beneficial to upgrade the programming, by all means, go for it man.

I have no problems with the speed.

But +1 for more smilies laugh.gif

I've had some problems with site slowness/connectivity issues, but nothing too bad. If you feel an upgrade would be good, then do it. If you need help with it, let me know. I is local script nerd.

more features will be great. Like personalizing our member page, IDK.

The feedback system is not fully working, well sort of. Like, for it to work complete, members have to use it kindasad.gif .

I wish there is another system in place to earn more pictures. I have created some how to, but have not pm the mods since i will get nothing.

I would enjoy more pics, that is what i really want, more smiles, and more pics, and did i say more pics. lol

but downtime, man, we will suffer. But all for the greater good!

Ok, sounds like it's a good plan to upgrade. smile.gif

I'm going to do some research and see just how much work it's going to be.

New Toyota project coming soon...
i love this site to death but i think a change would be good smile.gif

BANNED. for life, you moron.
I really think the Feedback option should stay around. It makes or breaks buying and selling stuff around here for me. if someone is new and doesnt have any credit, im not buying from him. I would love changes, but please bring back the feedback option.
just remember to back up, back up, back up.
I say
Profile page needs updating make it more customised. such as a picture of a celica, which you can change (colour, engines, body kit etc) of what your doing to your celica/plan to do/ really wish you could do (everyone thinking a 3S-GTE swap biggrin.gif)
Invision Power Board v2.2 out?
a gernal tidy up. cleaning of useless/dead threads
new threads wash and Wax as well as the 'meets' thread add track racing drag (legal of course)
adding more info on your celica (engine) on the left here

Thanks for all the input. I'm considering working on the upgrade tonight, with downtime starting around 8pm PST. Would that work for everyone?

New Toyota project coming soon...
no probs here.

Sounds good, I'll be online tonight if you need help with anything.

I will return one day.
Sounds good. smile.gif

Here's my basic plan of attack:

8pm PST - Take the site offline. This has to be done in order to ensure the database isn't being changed while I update.

I'll make backups to my hard drive as well as Amazon S3 of the entire forums directory and database. There's a good chance that the changes will be too great to do all at once and I may revert everything back if I can't get it working by tomorrow morning.

Hopefully by 9pm I'll have backups done and can start the upgrades.

Hopefully by 10pm I can have the forums upgraded and have the site online shortly afterwards, but I doubt the upgrade process will go smoothly. I expect the upgrade scripts to fail, meaning I'll be updating everything manually, which will take several hours.

But by tomorrow morning, I should have the site back online, hopefully with the forums upgraded, but possibly in the same state that it's currently in now.

New Toyota project coming soon...
Damn man - I admire your skills and your dedication to the site you started for a car you no longer own [but you'll always be a Celica driver at heart I bet - you'll get another one someday I'll bet wink.gif ]
