Exhaust advice - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #58268 24 posts Started by 94CeliGTguy
Hi, I am new to the site and I have had my 94 gt since january. I enjoy the site a lot. I have searched the forums about this but stilll have a few questions. I have a ebay cai (mostly for the sound as I dont know if it helps performance much), but I want to try something else to improve the cars performance. My celica has 112k miles on it and I cant afford to turbo. I have read about different members exhaust setups and I think I want a 2.25 with resonator and magnaflow muffler. I am graduating at the end of may and will have some cash to spend. Can anyone tell me about the performance to be gained from this exhaust set up or if there is something else i can do to the car that will be a better use of money(possibly ebay headers?). The car is my daily driver so it has to pass emissions. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks
Better low end torque and better top end from then the factory 2" exhaust piping. Reason being is that your allowing the engine to "breath" more easily by reducing back-pressure and having a better flowing exhaust flow due to the the increased pipe diameter. I've been from 2.5" and recently downgraded to 2.25" on my pipe diameter and I noticed that I have more torque on my bottom to mid rpms and haven't sacrificed any high end power since the 2.5" piping. So yeah, I recommend 2.25" to everyone with a 2.0 to 1.6L engine and anything higher than a 2.0 go with 2.5" piping.

what is a resonator? pics?

Here's my 2.25 exhaust setup. This is an under-axle catback consisting of a magnaflow high flow cat. converter, 20" 2.25" inlet/outlet magnaflow resonator, and a 2.5" megan racing n1 muffer. This was put together by a local exhaust shop.

BTW, the overall tone of your exhaust is dependant on the type of rear muffler your using.

isn't usually better to have a stright pipe rather than to have heaps of bends?

it is better for a turbo^^^^

BANNED. for life, you moron.
netrata, awesome post! Where did you buy parts?
The magnaflow resonator and high flow cat. converter I bought from summitracing.com and the megan racing n1 muffler I bought from ebay lol. But soon it will change with a blitz nur muffler.
how much power did you gain?

to assdyno +10?
Really more like +2?

Honestly i'm not sure because there is no dyno here on Maui. But all I can see that torque and high end power improved from what I can notice.
Thanks for all of the replies. I think now I should go with a 2.5 setup not 2.25. I also think it should be under the rear axel. Does anyone have advice about where to start the 2.5 pipes? after the flex pipe maybe? Also what differences would there be without a resonator.

whats that the pic of the three one??? is it a resonator??? also what does it do???

3rd pix is a rear muffler. What this part of the exhaust does is it sets the overall tone of the exhaust system. What a resonator does is simply muffle the exhaust tone so it's quieter.

Im gettin' a 2,5" over the axel going exhaust, from cat to rear.

How much does that setup usually cost including exhaust installation and parts?

Parts and installation on the car cost roughly $340. Shipping for the parts to me was around $60 because of the weight of the parts and the distance from the mainland U.S. to Hawaii.

In my st202 I have BEAMS Red-Top swaped .....
Going to upgrade my exhaust ....
Now I have beams-header and Y-pipe finished 60MM after that from catalic-converter all parts are stock .....

I bought SARD Sports Catalyzer from Altezza 3s-ge beams (IN-60MM, OUT-60MM) with resonator .....

Looking for RS-R 60mm muffler .....

BEAMS swaped .......
I honestly would say yes. That is actually the muffler I originally wanted but then decided to stick with N1 style mufflers instead.
so i want to keep the stock 5sfe 2.2 and just see what kind of decent power out of it...i plan on turboing it eventually but id like to start with the basics...i.e. exhaust i dont really want a resonator and i want a full exhaust from the headers back does anyone have any suggestions...should i go with 2.5in piping and do i need an aftermarket cat? i plan on doing aftermarket headers but want the exhaust first or do i need to do both at once...thanks?
I'm getting catback exhaust first then going back later for headers and highflow cat, apparently you need to change stock cat converter to put headers in. Anyway for a GT 5SFE I think 2.25 is the way to go as thats what everyone on the forums has said.
Would the ebay header work with this set up?

Sorry, but I have to step in on the resonator question.

A resonator is not a muffler. It is not a baffled muffler, such as what you'd find on your stock car. It is not a straight-through muffler packed with sound absorbing materials, such as you'd buy from MagnaFlow.

A resonator is an entirely different form of noise suppression. Where mufflers either slow the exhaust flow down (baffled) or absorb the noise (insulated), resonators use sound cancellation. They are echo chambers designed to bounce sound waves into each other, so the two waves cancel each other out.

Cars as a rule come with a resonator somewhere under the body, not a secondary muffler. Even round mufflers are not resonators. Here's how to tell -- tap it with a fingernail. A muffler will absorb the vibration and produce a dull response. A resonator will ring like a bell. Just because a muffler is round and goes below the car does not make it a resonator.

It is the lack of a resonator which is often responsible for the annoying buzz of poorly done aftermarket exhausts. Mufflers will significantly lower the volume and somewhat smooth the tone; a resonator will somewhat lower the volume and significantly smooth the tone.

A resonator can be purchased from just about any reputable exhaust shop or supplier.

When planning my exhaust, I chose a MagnaFlow straight-through oval muffler, a MagnaPack straight-through round muffler and a CarSound catalytic converter with a resonated core (a combined high-flow cat and resonator). Lots of sound suppression, good tone moderation, and low flow impairment. Never did buy it all -- few other things came up -- but it priced out well from hottexhaust.com
