Can anybody tell me what kind of oxygen sensor this is, and what type of car/engine it is used for?

I have a 98 celica chassis with a jdm 93 sw20 3sgte swapped in. I ordered a replacement o2 sensor for a 93 mr2t, figuring the ecu would need a 93 3sgte sensor.

Well my replacement sensor has 4 wires, and the clip has 4 electrical contacts. The one currently installed has 1 wire w/ 1 contact. I searched online, but it looks like the 5sfe uses a 2 wire sensor, so what do I have?

I did a bit of searching on mr2oc, and it seems that the OEM replacement IS indeed a 4-wire sensor, but there have been a few other members that have 93 jspec 3sgte's that came with 1-wire o2 sensors, so now I'm not sure if I should be looking for...a 1-wire 5sfe sensor or a 1-wire 3sgte sensor. I don't know why toyota would put different sensors between USDM and JDM 3sgte motors though (assuming that the sensors are OEM).

Does anybody have any experience with universal sensors?

My 5sfe is a 1 wire o2 sensor. Lets say you use a 5sfe one wire o2 sensor with your swap. Will it throw codes?

I'm not sure. My CEL isn't working properly and I have never been able to check codes. Theoretically I should be able to pull them straight from the ECU w/ a test light, but have not actually done that.

I'm searching a cdn autoparts website, and found this; but again it has 2 wires, and one does not even have a flange.

The website lists different (looking) parts for 6gc vert, 6gc hatch/coupe, and N/A mr2.

I found this for a N/A mr2 5sfe. Looks like it should work.

thats a pretty normal toyota O2 sensor actually. my 7afe has one just like it.

Did you wire up the 3rd ecu plug? IIRC the 3rd ecu plug is basically for the check engine light.

I don't know. The previous owner sent the car to Jamasco to have the swap done. How would I check the wiring on the 3rd plug? When I get a chance to change my HU out, I'll have a look at the ECU.

I'm not quit sure. Because I will be doing the swap within the week or so and will be having lots of questions myself.

the 4 wire o2 senser has a built in heater to get the senser up to temperature.
It generally the 4 wire o2 sensers is used on a newer car after the catalytic converter. The one you want is the pre catilytic converter senser.

try looking up a pre cat senser on a newer mr2?

why not try ordering a jdm 93 mr2t oxygen sensor?
i would assume the sensors are different since the jdm ECU's are different from the usdm ECU's.

The sensor is different because of emissions.
3+ wire sensors have heaters in the sensor, so it will start reading quicker.
O2 sensors have to be at several hundred degrees before they'll read correctly.

For whatever reason Toyota ran 1 wire for JDM cars, but ran 4 wire for USDM cars. It wasn't mandated by law, because the 5S of the time had a single wire sensor.

They'll have the same signal, once they're both warmed up.

You should be fine running an early 5SFE sensor, though the connector is probably different.

Early cars that had 2 sensors ran a single wire sensor after the cat, at least as far as Toyotas go.

okay, I have a little bit of experience with this. The one wire sensor that came with the JDM 3s has toyota part #89465-20180 and denso part #065500-4060. I searched online but could find exact part # both on toyota and denso websites. About a year ago, I bought a bosch equivalent for the US 3sgte which was the 4 wire type. Big mistake, because even after converting it to run as 4 wire or heated sensor, it was giving me a really bad mpg. One problem with the bosch sensor is that the probe that goes into the downpipe is just too short. So last month, I went searching again, this time on denso website and found one that is very close to the original one and the part# is 234-1057. it is still a little smaller that the OEM one mainly from the flange up but from the flange down (the probe itself) is still identical. I had just installed it and noticed a big improvement in mpg over the bosch sensor. The website I got mine from is www.densoproducts.com and you can type in the denso part number to look at the one I currently have on. The only word of advice is to stay away from the bosch type and try to get a denso one that is as close as possible to your current jdm one.

I tried a few different dealers and they were all useless. They gave me different run-around stories of how toyota does not want customers ordering "japanese" parts, and toyota "limits" their database to only include USDM P/N's. One dealer took 10 minutes to find a P/N for a 93 USDM mr2, and when I inquired about the number of wires, I was told I had to order the $300 sensor to find out. I asked him for the P/N and it did not even have the right amount of numbers (post dash was only 4 digits), and he insisted that was all there was to the P/N.


Malecrod, the denso P/N 234-1057 is for a universal 1-wire sensor. I'm not sure what the difference would be between the universal one ($30) and the OE replacement ($60).

What makes a universal sensor different than a OE replacement? Is it worth 2x as much?

All o2 sensors are the same. The only difference is Heated/Unheated or wideband.
Go to any parts store and ask for a universal single wire o2 sensor for a 1990 celica gt (5sfe).
The universal sensor means that you just get a wire that you solder/crimp onto the harness of your old o2 sensor. The oem type just comes with the plug already on there (not worth it for 2x the price). I have a cheap bosch sensor on mine and it works great. Far better then the original one that came with the car did.

Art, which bosch sensor do you have? I bought the one for a 923sgte with the 4wire but the probe that goes into the downpipe was very short. I didn't think much of it till later when I installed the denso and noticed a huge improvement in mpg. The part# of the bosch one I got is 0258 005 728. I don't want to put bosch down unfairly, so I just wanna make sure. here is a pict of it compared to the JDM 1 wire one:

I bought a basic bosch for a 5sfe.
I think the reason why you got poor mpg is because you tried to use a 4 wire sensor. In a 4 wire sensor, one of the wires acts as a ground, where as in a single wire setup, it gets its ground when you bolt it in. So you probably just hooked up the signal wire, with no ground, and the sensor wasn't able to do its job correctly. Not to mention that 4 wire sensors are designed to be heated at all times.

What kind of mpg do you average ?

I actually researched and I think I had it wired right with all 4 wires connected; 2 were ground, one was signal and the last one was 12v ignition source.
But with the bosch, I was averaging 24mpg. Now with the denso, I average 28mpg. I took a recent trip to Chicago and computed 32mpg at one point. But I was stuck in low boost mode of 7psi max because of a TVSV issue I had.

I get a rock solid 19mpg... but thats at 15-16psi of boost driven mostly on city roads.
