When i changed my oil the last time i overfilled it by about half a quart, this happend because much to my rage i spilled some so i overcompensated too much when i tried to put in a little over 4 quarts. The engine has been run for a few weeks like this, yesterday while the engine was warmed up i checked my oil and was shocked at how overfilled it was, i was wondering will this hurt anything? If you overfilled (depends how much) your motor with oil my advice to you is drain it and start over again it. Yes is can cause engine damage when you overfill the crankcase with oil, it'll foam up and cause problems like throw a rod through your block or worse a seized motor.

^ I totally agree. You could do irreparable damage by running your engine with too much oil in it. Drain some of it out before you screw up your gaskets/valve seals/whatever it is that gets ruined by this (I forget, but I know it's not good).
it may be tedious, but just drain a little bit out, check it again, and repeat until it is filled to the full line.

It is actually ok to be up to a quart over. It is recommended, especially when you take many sharp turns.

alright guys thanks for all the replies, so is half a quart (roughly) over enough to do all that? If it is ill drain it alittle tommrow shouldnt be too big of a deal

It'll be worse if you have a high mileage engine as all the seals are probably worn if not leaking already. My oil is always at 3/4 you never want too low or high.

yeah, you ever take off your oil pan? if so you'll see that the baffle is right about at the full line on your dip stick, and when you remove the baffle you'll see the crank sits pretty much half an inch over that. and if i recall correctly the whole length between your full to empty marks it one qt. so that'll give you an idea of how much it is over and how deep your crank is sitting in oil, foaming it up causing all kinda of issues

1/2 quart over is not desirable, but it wont be the death of your engine either.

I drained it a little, drether be safe than sorry my car dont seem to burn oil (my old celica burned some) so i figured it would be best to be on the safe side.

lol it had been settin for a hour or 2 but was still pretty warm to the touch when i checked it
