Is it possible for an automatic 5sfe to be swapped out with a manual camry 3sfe tranny? Also the tranny i believe is using hydrolic but in the stickies it says we use shifter cable, how does that all work out? I'm trying to convert but need ideas such as i think i need manual ECU etc. Anybody with real experience that knows for sure? I dont want a failed project or a non working vehicle.

as long as its an S54 trans, I can probably look it up at work. What year Camry are you trying to get it out of? Is it that hard to find a 5S tranny?

if your car is a 94-95 you do not need an ECU, your auto wiring harness will not even plug into the 94-95 manual ECU. You just need to know how to wire it to make it start. 96+ you need the whole ECU, it plugs right in.

THe model before the 92-96 camry's. What else would I worry about. I mean this tran I heard is hydraulic and ours is shift cables.

Shift cables are for shifting specifically. Hydraulic refers to clutch actuation, which nearly all toyota FWD trannies are since the mid 80's. Cable trannies aren't very common on Toyotas. That said... It's best if you can to source a Celica S54 trans. The gearing on the Camry trannies are much longer compared to the Celica's.

Umm... I don't think you understand. "Hydraulic" doesn't refer to the shifting (at least not with a manual trans). It only refers to engaging the clutch. "Shift cables" as you refer to them, has to do with physically shifting the tranny... and has no relation to the hydraulic system... A Majority of Toyota trannies are hydraulic, meaning they use a clutch master/slave cylinder system to engage/disengage the clutch, and shift linkages are simply the cables that shift the tranny from gear to gear. There are also clutch cable type trannies, but NOT is most 1990 and newer toyotas, and only very rarely in the mid-late 80's toyotas. In other words, YES, a Camry tranny should work. 6th gen Celicas use hydraulic trannies too! AND they also use shift linkages to move through the gears.
