hey everyone i just bought my 6gen celica last sunday, and have to say i love it, much more fun than my saturn POS, but anyways im new to the forum and i have a couple questions for u guys,

1. ive been driving manual for a lil over a year now and with this car im having trouble downshifting into 3rd, iuno even if i should be downshifting but its a habit of mine, anyway, it feels like i have the clutch fully engaged yet when i try to move the gear shifter i get GRINDAGE, anywayz maybe im just not used to the clutch but if anyone has any ideas im all ears.

2. my car has been having trouble idleing when its cold, ill start it up and the rpms will just go up and down nothing to major, id say below 2000 but it just feels like its about to die, unless i give it a lil gas and go, im not sure what the problem is but it only happens when the engine is cold, any ideas?

1. could be a bad syncro. does it happen when up shifting into 3rd?? or into any other gears up or down?

2. more than likely oyu just need to clean your idle air control valve (IAC) my manual celica idles around 1600-1700 cold.
before i cleaned my IAC i had rough idle, but only when it was cold. cleaning it cleared the issue

If you are getting grinding, most of the time its Tranny trouble. and syncro would be my first check.more so if its only happening in that one gear.


There are a few reason though i would check as well as Cleaning the IAC. Do a Sea Foam flush to the intake, and fuel system, check your air filter too. make sure its clean.


And because i was wondering too, Stephen Lee, How do you go about cleaning at IAC. I thought there was just replacing.

try double clutching. see if still grinds.

If you're coming down from 4th/5th into 3rd, how fast are you going? What RPM's are you at when it grinds into 3rd?

are you rev matching when you downshift...

My car also grinds when I shift to 3rd gear. My cuzin said to fix it I would have to replace the transmission.
