fuse question - 6G Celicas Forums

this might be a really stupid question, idk kindasad.gif
ok i kno very little about electrical and wiring, but i know that when i plug in my radar detector to the cig lighter, it blows the fuse and my radio, clock and cig lighter doesnt work frown.gif . is this a problem with my car? or a bad radar detector? does this happen to anyone else?
that shouldn't happen! have you tried plugging in something else in the cig lighter?
don't know much about radar detector but it maybe needs more power then the fuse can handle....or the radar detector is just bad... smile.gif
i donät think the car is the problem, but it's hard to know without testing some things first...
yea my cell phone charger works fine. and my ipod radio transmitter thingy works fine, but maybe those things dont need as much power as the radar
If you can detach the cord from the detector try plugging it in by itself. If the fuse still blows the cord has a short. Odds are there is a problem with either the cord or the detector itself, they don't use much power.
check the plug on the detector mine was shorting inside caused by the wires being pulled and or stretched just redid the wires and was ok you might have same problem thats if yours isnt a sealed plug
Okay;

1 - Test the cigarette lighter with a meter; make sure all reading are good.

2 - (with a good fuse) plug in detector wire (no Detector attached) see if it blows fuse

3 - If not then it's a problem with the radar detector itself; Pull it apart and look for shorts.

4 - If you find shorts then souder them out, take to radio-shack and replace. biggrin.gif

Or buy a new radar-detector. rolleyes.gif It's you're money, do as you please.

Goodluck.
