Simple Question - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #5949 18 posts Started by Hym3n
One very simple question. Does the 3S-GTE engine work on an Automatic? Now, a better question--does it work on an Automatic AT200 (USDM ST)? If not, is it within reason to change the transmission and do whatever else necessary to put a 3S-GTE into the USDM ST? ..if it does require additional modifications (beyond transmission), list what you think should be changed.

For those of you that just love to help us n00bs out:
-What kind of risk will I run using this engine? (i.e.: could some random part blow much easier with this engine?)
-Should I replace anything else in my car after installing this engine?
-What would you recommend doing assuming I had infinite cash and wanted to keep my car a 6GC?

And for those of you that just want to help me out because I'm new to the site:
-How would an Intake/Exhaust upgrade fair against a 3S-GTE upgrade? (I know the price differences, I just want to know hp comparison)
-What brand would you recommend for Intake? (if it's exotic, where can I get it?)
-What EXACTLY is an 'exhaust'.. I mean, (god I hate sounding so stupid, don't ream me too bad..), I'm seeing exhaust manifold, pipe (der der), silencer, etc.. and nothing really makes sense since most of these websites just have part names and prices, no description. What is the part, why am I looking for it, how much should I expect it to run me?
-What risks do I run having installed an Intake/Exhaust? (would it stress any particular part more than intended causing a shorter life span? what parts? why?)
-Any idea on how much my insurance could increase by installing an Intake/Exhaust? A 3S-GTE?
-Does installing a body kit or any other interior/exterior styling component affect insurance rates?

Thanks guys, (don't be too mean, I'm 15 and I guess this is about the only way I have to learn about this stuff..)

W00t, youd have to do the whole auto tranny swap. Um you SHOULD replace your axles and possibly your motormouunts. And im really tired if no one answers this by 1st hour tomorrow i will finish.
no ST tranny will bolt up to a 3sgte engine.

you can run an auto tranny on a 3sgte but it will require custom work. there have been posts about this, search for more info

So basically, a 3S-GTE swap would cost a lot but give crazy good performance? From the sounds of things, it requires a lot of work to install, and a considerable amount of adding/removing parts (at least on my model). That sound about right?

...Would I be better off with a simple Intake/Exhaust?

-Brian
UMM why would you get a 3SGTE and want to put in an auto?

That would ruin the fun of having the engine
>_< I don't know how to drive a manual. I plan on taking a class soon though, I wish I would've from the beginning, from what I've driven in a manual, it's much more fun.

-Brian
Auto is just fine, stock auto trannies sap power yes, get a stronger tourque converter or get a rebuilt tranny. How many 500-700hp automatic supras are there....quite a bit. Im tired of people constantly knocking auto's, Manuals are better but Autos arent off the wall terrible specially if you strengthen them.

Thank you Kwanza, you answered a lot of questions I had. Well, I may make a new post, basically just trying to find out what I can do on top of Intake/Exhaust to make it faster. I topped out at 85-90, and while that's fast enough, there are some cases where if it were a bit fast that'd really help.

-Brian
Man, not to be the mean person on this post, but you have ALOT of research to do. Everyone else's knowledge on this board is from extensive and endless hours of research. You'll learn much more than any one of us could just tell you. Just sit down, read a few magazines, search through a few sites and you'll find more information than you can handle. Have fun!
Heh, that's what I was asking in another post of mine-- do you have any recommended resources that you use either online or book-wise?

-Brian
for engine basics, check out: http://www.howstuffworks.com/
very good info there, explained in a clear concise manner.

as for what you can do to a 7afe to make it faster. if you want to stick to your basic bolt-ons you would be looking at:

- cold air intake (100)
- catback exhaust (300)
- header (eliminate cats) (150)
- underdrive pulley (100)
- a chip or air fuel controller (300)

with proper tuning this should yield you high 15s, low 16s.

btw the prices I listed are lower than average, but should give you a good idea. you will also factor in the install costs if you can't do it yourself.
I've been looking through some import racing magazines, and I'm seeing a lot of Ignitions that supposedly add hp? Are those any good or just advertising?

gh0st_d0g, do you recommend ALL of that? What do you mean by high 15s low 16s?

Thanks,
-Brian

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I read through a lot on howstuffworks (thank you.. again), and I'm probably going to think some of this through some more. I need to ask some insurance questions first, not like insurance on 16 y/o males will be cheaper with performance parts.. so y'know..
