the name dogbox cames from dog teeths used for engagment instead of syncros. that allows you to shift w/out using clutch. but you can still use it like a normal gearbox and shift with clutch.
the sound thats sound like reverse gear is sound of straight cut gear teeths. which are more stronger then helical cut gears.
they are not used in street cars because they are not comfortable.
so it doesnt means that its a dog box when you hear that reverse gear sound. it may be only using straight cut gears.
sequential shifter is an other story, which is separate from gearbox.
