Topic #59700 20 posts Started by 3sgteLuke
i say: i want to remove my climate controls to change the lights

you say: omfg this topic has been covered a million times cant you check the stickies!?

i say: they dont work anymore.

you say: sad face

so who can tell me how to remove the climate controls? i removed all of the screws but cant manage to disconect the "heater control switch lines" <--- [correct terminology?] there happen to be two of them and they are preventing me from removing the whole assembly. any suggestions?

also, if someone has a dash clock for sale i would definitely buy it... i shorted mine out and 3 of the four digits work now... dont ask..

way to make me feel stupid griffgirl frown.gif well i was looking at the stickies above the interior forum, and only one of those works. and its not much help. thanks for the videos. they are awesome. thats why i love this place. the only thing that has me worried is routing the black cable back to the engine compartment. difficult?

easy... get a clothes hanger and hook one side on the cable, then slide the other side back to the engine, as soon as you see it out, pull it from the other engine side.

Agreed, it's super easy. I was totally intimidated by this too when I took my CC out. I didn't even need a hanger. It went right through. You realize it's much easier when you actually do it, than when you kind of think about it. It's super easy.
happy face. thanks guys im gonna get on it right away

How did it go?

Wasn't there someone selling HVAC's with custom LED's awhile back?

I can't find that post...

I thought I would tag along on this post and hopefully someone is still watching it smile.gif So I swapped in the Scion stereo which looked bad next to the green cluster gauges so I changed the color of those, and now the climate control looks pretty stupid next to everything else. You can see where I'm going here, one change leads to another leads to another....I've read several of the posts on the topic of changing the climate control colors and now feel mostly confident that I can do it. However, none of the topics asked the question that I have. I'm going to keep it simple at first and keep the individual button LEDS green or orange for now. I am hesitant to use LEDs for the backlights for two reasons; 1) light dispersion (I know there are ways around this) and 2) the inability to dim LEDS without reducing the life. Since the lights are original on the car (13 years old) I don't want to take them out, paint them only to find all of the stress from the process has broken one kindasad.gif I figured I would take the next easiest route and just replace the bulbs with newer colored bulbs. I found the following online and thought it would be pretty easy to simply replace the three existing light assemblies. Unfortunately I don't know which (if any) might work. Can someone who has done this before or maybe someone who has their climate control sitting in pieces give me an idea which one to order. I prefer instant gratification and don't want to take the thing apart, measure it and then wait for the shipment smile.gif

i found a toyota bulb listed on a site once when i searched for the part number in google
(toyota part num: 84999-70007) it said 9.5mm TS

i did my cc unit with modified toyota bulbs and num74 leds before the neo-wedge was available. but i got enough toyota bulbs to return to stock (10 bucks a pop at the dealer) and enough neo-wedges to experiment some if the thing ever comes out of my car again. anyway the 10mm neo-wedge (what was listed like that on superlumination.com) looks damn close in a side by side comparison. i still can't say for sure since i haven't tried it myself.

i've never heard that dimming leds will reduce their life. and, in fact i have a computer mouse with a pulsating led inside. are you sure about that??

also i have a 1mb, lots-a-photos cc unit howto i wrote up the month i removed and dis-assembled it 4 times. if you want i can send you that in an email. at some point this site might allow my to post that one. but i can't add a howto yet, and it seems like it would be rude to mess Coomer's up (since it was pretty helpful to me).
Why not just add your how-to as a thread, and then people can refer back to it. I know I'd love to see it, I want to change my CCs to LEDs and the more info the better.
i was thinking that with 1mb of photos it would be sorta big for a forum. you think maybe use picasa and say "56K warning!!!" ??
My climate control light on the first top row are all dead, everything else still works. How do I fix that, perhaps changing the bulbs out but then again, I would love more info on the how to.

Zimluura - Do you mind sending me a copy of your how to? thanks

I remember messing with this. there is a plastic "diffuser" that takes light from one bulb and directs it to the top row of buttons. So you probably just need to replace the bulb . its easy enough if you know how to take apart the controls. ^ the video above is awesome
trd proven: i don't see your email address in your profile. did you allow people to see that??

njccmd: those videos are sweet!

maybe i should make a forum post for it tonight.
That is an awesome video - only if they showed how to remove the CC and put it back. I mean just for a complete how to sake.

Something that I'm going to try next time I tear mine out is tying a string to the cable from the engine bay so it'll be easier to thread it through. I'll let you know how it works out for me.

Call me a traitor! See if I care. ;)
