>I still tip at buffets...obviously not much but they still take ur dishes when ur done with your 1st or 2nd dish, refill ur drinks and clean after you eat. Ive always been a good tipper though.

x2. Usually I'll leave 2 or 3 bucks on the table depending on how attentive the person is; they still bring you drinks and have to clean up after you.

BTW: tips are taxable income, it's not just an Oregon thing. When you work in food-service, particularly restaurants, there's a certain percentage of your earned income that is assumed to be in tips, therefor you're taxed on it (which would really suck if you suck at your job or you're serving CelicaST). That's why I try to tip in cash - at least cash is a little easier to not claim if you're being tipped directly, as opposed to like Starbuck's where the tips are pooled and accounted for on your W2.

Ah! I just caught it!

I'm sorry, but that girl was dense. She had no idea how to split a bill... which was fine, but aggrevated me a little. Then proceeded to not bring me the fries I ordered, AND THEN not picking up my glass for a refill. She got a small tip, but there has been times where I've had to write obsenities on the check (small shop in Seattle charging me $17 for a salad which I was under the impression was complementary!).

I am a firm believer that tips are EARNED not DESERVED. I have a rough idea how much I am going to spend at a restaraunt - thus, I have a 20-25% tip range that I walk in the door with. Every time I am displeased with my waiter/waitress I knock a little off the top. If you end up with a check on the table with a written "tip" on the back of it that means you suck at your job, and consequently your life as well. If you do a good job (do your job!) then you will be rewarded with a large tip. There is one extenuating circumstance where I will tip on bad service, and that is if you're new. You're getting used to the job, you've got someone mentoring you, etc. I'll tip that person for doing a good job of picking it up.

>I try to avoid eating out and having to tip because I make way better food than the crap they make at restaurants ... there is only 1 restaurant in Boston where the food is amazing and it's called P.F. Chang's China Bistro...It's a wicked high class place but you tip well because the people are wicked attentive.

sorry but PF Changs is nothin special...not even high class. Just ur average chain restaurant....u want to go to a "high class" place, go to Tavern on the Green in NYC.

10 bucks is ridiculous for a buffet. i will tip 3 or 4 dollars max at a buffet.

^ fair enough. I've only been twice, both times I thought it was very cool, I just thought the food itself was over rated. But yes, definitely high class. Way higher class than I am, that's for sure! LOL

And I agree, 3 or 4 bucks MAX at a buffet. Some buffets are nicer than others, which *may* warrant as much as 4 bucks, but generally 2 or 3. Then again, that brings us full-circle back to my evident lack of class whence dining out (as I sit here at my desk eating salad out of tupperware). laugh.gif Not that buffets exactly qualify as "classy" either, mind you. Some try to be, but really, there's never any class to be had in "all you can eat." hahaha But then there's even less class, in my opinion, in NOT leaving a tip.

>sounds like shannon is the only other one who has served tables here. i worked as a server for over a year and i always leave big tips since then. i dont know about other restaurants, but that job was busy and very stressful at times. just fyi for those who dont know, most servers do not get paid minimum wage. i made $2.13 an hour plus tips. most places also require servers to pay tip-share to the hosts, bussers, bartenders. i paid 4% tip-share. that 4% is off of the bill, not the tip. so if a table has a $100 bill and they leave no tip, i just PAID 4 dollars to serve them. and obviously every tip i made was actually 4% less than what was given to me. always leave a tip unless the server is horrible and/or rude. heres how i categorized tips. 0-10% bad, 10-15% ok, 15-20% good, >20% great. granted this is a buffet, i still think you should leave at least a 10% tip

edit- yes you do get taxed on tips just like any other form of income. you claim your tips at the end of the day. as forkee said though, cash tips are nice because i could claim less than what i actually got.

i served for about 5 years.

if you constantly go in and not tip then you better believe you're lucky that all she did was take your $2.

I would've had a special pitcher of water just for you.

Tavern is NOT A BAR... It has a bar but its NOT a bar. Tavern on the green is a VERY famous, high class restaurant...last time i was there, my friends and i dropped close to 2,000 dollars on dinner and drinks.

and yes...NYC bars are 100 times better than Houston bars. rolleyes.gif

I was a prep cook at a 3 star restaurant when I was in highschool. Early in that career I decided to take my homecoming date to work for dinner. Bill was like $75 for both of us. I left a $5 tip. I knew that it was polite to tip, but didnt know how to tip. So the next day i go into work, the chef pulls me aside. He was like, "hey do you know how to tip?" I replied something like, "WTF are u talking about?" He told me that the server was pissed that I left a s***ty tip and explained how to tip. He also added that I should tip well when I come in for dinner since I have to work with the servers. LOL. Later on that night the server came up to me and gave me a tipping scale card. Funny thing was I was cool with the server and talked to him all the time. I felt soooo bad for it. Honestly I didnt know how it worked. Ever since then I usually leave 15+%.

oh man that sucks, a $5 tip on a $75 check is almost a slap in the face... almost.

To live, is to sufferTo survive, thats to find meaning, in the suffering....
Ok any1 else takes your cash without permission it's theft a waitress does it and it's a tip???

Here in Australia our waiting staff make approx. $20 an hour and you can't leave a tip with the person who waited on you have to toss it in a jar at the register if they have one, most places here don't.

If the establishments paid a decent rate you wouldn't have this crap.
After reading this I feeling sorry for any1 thats waited tables in the states but yeah she had no right to take your money.

I would have thrown something.
what crem said.

except i wouldnt have thrown something, i would have just ignored it haha and looked at the server like they were retarded or something
