i have a torque converter...and, i'll have to say that it really does help.

anyway...it's weird how mine works...

if i slam on the gas, it'll let me almost redline before hitting 2nd.

i can also get up to 70-something mph in 2nd.

all i can say is that it SLAMS into 2nd. i get chirps, lol...

now, if i only had a little tope end power.

I don't have a torque converter and I still almost redline before reaching 2nd (with the pedal to the floor). I just did it the other day when I pulled out in front of someone.

maybe not performance ones, but every auto tranny has a torque converter

lol lol..ok autos have tourque converters that shift your gears while trannys have the wonderful world of flywheels and clutches to shift.

the torque converter just replaces the clutch setup and make a liquid connection with the engine, which lets you come to a stop and still be in gear. with a 5spd, you stop the wheels, you also stop the engine

no you can NOT put a lightened flywheel on an automatic.

Well, basically...a performance torque converter will do a few things. One of the main ones that many people like is increase the stall rate. The revolutions of the engine that the torque converter can hold and then when you shift...like stock on our auto trannies is 2500 rpm i think. So if you go to neutral...stick it to 2500rpm...then shove it to drive...it will go...if you have it at say 4000rpm then shove it to drive...the torque converter will automatically shove the engine down to 2500rpm (which isn't good for it by the way) and then put power to the wheels. Most performance torque converters for our cars have an increased stall rate to 3500rpm. Thi increased stall rate can help you do some really good neutral drop burnouts, if you feel like messing stuff up that is.

The performance torque converter will also help eliminate the delay you feel from when the car is at idle to when you step on the gas...basically gives you a faster launch than with a clutch. The performance torque converter will grab a lot quicker than ur stock one which is the exact cause of the quicker ETs.

Upgrading your torque converter to one fo these is an awesome idea...and if you don't want to be out of a car for a month while u send it in and they do the work...go to the junkyard and rip one out of the same tranny for like 50 bucks. It doesn't matter what kind of shape it is in really. Then, to replace...it's kinda like a weekend job.

I suppose you could compare replacing your stock converter with a performance one to replacing your stock clutch to a perfomance one. It's all just to be able to put the power to the ground quicker and lose less HP throughout the journey from the engine to the wheels.
