I just finished installing my 6.5" phoenix golds in the doors, was pretty easy, a little custom work, the how-to on here was very useful. Now the rear I thought were 5.25". But after tearing apart all the rear panels to get to the rear speakers, I found the new speakers were a smaller than the stock. I measured the stock speaker and it is 5.5" diameter, which doesnt make sense cuz I dont think there are such thing as 5.5" speakers. Anyone know whats going on here?? Help me out please.
BTW: I have the 4-speaker system.

I just replaced the speakers in my 95 ST and the front and rear speakers were both 6.5". The front I had to do a little work to get them to fit but the back ones just screwed right into the stock bracket.

hmm thats weird, the rear stock speakers look alot smaller than the fronts... I'll take off one of the front ones and try and see if 6.5"s will fit in the rear too. thanks

Both the front and back are 6.5" speakers however the front ones have a large metal ring around the speaker so it will fit in the 8" speaker bracket.

Yup for sure they are not 6.5" in the rear. They are 5.5" and I had to make a custom bracket to hold them from wood. Its pretty weird I dont think theres even such thing as 5.5" speakers. Anyone else have this?

hmm that is weird cause like I said I just replaced mine saturday and the 6.5" just fit right in the stock bracket no problem.

so a 6.5" speaker is a direct replacement for the rear speakers and will screw right in the existing bracket? What work needs to be done to get a 6.5" speaker to replace the door speakers?

You have to make a custom bracket. There are several posts on this forum that show how to do it.

even for the rear speakers? I know the fronts need custom brackets, but the rears need ones too? Got any links to the posts on how to make the brackets?

Check the Interior/Audio/Electrical/Wiring sticky for making brackets for the front, the back depends, yours might be direct 6.5" replacements or some weird size like mine which Im guessing noone else has then you have to make something up yourself.

I had 6.5 in the rear placements, but recently upgraded to 6x9 with a custom bracket and some trimming...

I'm also looking to update my speakers. As Mike found the fronts were no problem, 6.5" mid's fitting in nicely (I used a pre-bought adapter from eBay rather than modding the existing housing) but when looking at the rears they seem to be 5.5" speakers rather than the 6.5" I was expecting.

This is only the physical measurement of the speaker, i've not taken the panels off to actually measure the fitment. I have a photo of the speaker - can some one let me know what they use to upload and share images?

Will a 6.5" speaker fit directly in, or will I need a mounting adapter?

The exact size in the back is 16cm, these are pretty rare, but you can find them, i found some pioneers on ebay.

6.5" is about 16.5cm, so you should be able to squeeze them in without too much trouble.

they should fit directly in unless they are different in Europe. I've put them in 2 celis now. One was my 97 ST and the other my 99 GT.

So i've set photobucket up (thanks manphibian) and here is the image.



The JBL speakers I was going to use come with moutning rings which will fit the speaker into a 6", 6 1/4" or 6 1/2" space which is pretty handy for odd size holes. I just didn't want to buy them if they weren't going to fit.

Like I say the measurement is just of the speaker, not the actual mounting spacing so it could be that the aftermarket speaker will drop straight in there no worries.

It wont drop right in, trust me I just did it on mine, you need 5.25" speakers. The place where the old speakers are attached to you need to get the old bracket draw it on a piece of thin wood and cut it out and then draw your new speaker on the inside, cut them both out and thts it. Kinda hard to explain but once you take it apart you will know what i mean.

I've replaced ungodly amounts of rear 6gc speakers and yes - like manphibian says they are not really 6.5" speakers but they will drop in [I believe you can fit all but one screw IIRC - that screw you can either leave out or just make your own hole with some strength and a wood screw - done it many many times]. The speaker that best fits there is a 6.5" speaker - the 6.0"s ones you were talking about with the 6.25" and 6.5" adapter rings will surely fit easily.
And just to give you an idea I've changed those speakers on several GT's, ST's and Verts including 4 speaker systems, 6 and 8. The variances are in the door speakers - some have 8"s with tweets and 4.5"s [8 speaker system], some have 6.5"s in 8" rings with tweets [6 speaker system] and some just have 6.5"s and no tweets or 4.5"s [4 speaker system]. I've never seen any variance in a USDM rear speaker setup unless it was already replaced with an aftermarket system. If you use my front door How-to and just go with a 6.5"s for the rear you should have no problems. The speaker cone itself may be 5.5"s but the mounting surface will accept 6.5"s.
if someone had to make brackets it's because they bought the wrong size speaker.

Hell - if you still have a problem believing that - just ask all the people who've changed them out on here - 9/10's of them have 6.5"s installed and some have opted for 6x9s but that was personal preference. I can't find a decent 5.25" worth putting in there cause very few can handle the wattage and range my amps demand of them.

To be honest I'm not too worried about amping the speakers in the rear as I will just be running these off my head unit - I just want to improve the overall sound quality so either a 5.25" or 6.5" or will give me that.

I was planning on buying the 6.5's based on the How-To sticky you posted on this thread made me doubt that choice, I didn't want to purchase them and then find they didn't fit as it would be serious hassle having to send them back and lose out on all those postage costs but I'll probably risk it based on the majority of peoples comments!

I replaced my rears with 6.5" kickers. It wasn't an exact fit but I did make it work.

I bow down to your infinite knowlewdge on Celica Rear Speakers - i've just installed my new rear's and the 6.5" was a perfect fit. All 4 screws in and a nice snug fit into the stock rear speaker mount.



Thanks for the help although no audio work is worth mentioning now, not after rizer's hifi project post!!
