Handbrake Problem - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #61348 12 posts Started by Tigawoods
to make this short the handbrake in the rear that clamps onto the inside of the rotor is messed up.

there are the 2 sides to the clamp. the left is fine (small spring mechanism) the other side is loose.

the left spring is shorter, and has a shorter pin going through the middle of it. the right has a longer one, and when it is slightly tight (not as much as the left one) and it is so long that you cant move the small rotor b/c the back of the stud bolts will hit it.

when i tested the hand brake to see how it worked, the left side pushes out but the right clamp does not

anybody with any experience with this situation?

here is an overall pic. the right side spring is close to the outer rotor

like so

not like the left one which is tight (pic is turned)

the right clamp is loose

not against and tight like the left side

looks like the pin is too long, just get new ones

yeah thats the diagram i was looking at. the bent pin on the right side is the problem. it was never a problem before though, how all of a sudden could it have elongated? that is what is puzzling.

well my remedy for this situation is going to be this:

i am going to order a new pin. but in the meantime i am going to bend the org. pin to the point where it will pull the shoe back some more

Edit: scratch what I said before.

Can the pin be pushed in further? Could it somehow have come out? It doesn't make sense that it'd be too long suddenly.

There is no force that causes the pin to elongate , looks like dislocation of some parts on the right side.

thats what i was saying. well i did what i said. i bent the pin some more so it compressed the spring which in result pulled the clamp back away from the hub. that solved the problem.

i then had to solve the problem of something scraping up against the inside of the rotor.
i marked up a few places trying to figure out where it was scraping but found nothing. i knew it was some where on the backing plate.
after like 30min, i hit the backing plate in anger, and that stopped the scrapping haha

got a broken spring in there ?

nope the springs where mint. everything is in good order now, but during my playing around with everything i was playing around with the adjuster and now the clamps dont press against the rotor as well. i will have to adjust them further out

LOL I should've left what I originally posted up, I had said something about the backing plate scraping because they bend so easily

Glad you got it worked out though. Keep an eye on the e brake though, it's weird that it would get hung up like that in the first place.
haha, the odd thing is i pulled it towards the rotor and it didnt scrap...pulled it away and it did hrrrrmmmm
