Does it take a lot to swap manual for automatic transmission? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #61709 6 posts Started by FlyingBoat
I need a new engine. There is a used 5SFE locally that the guy is also selling the automatic transmission with it. My family would probably prefer auto, I have a daughter learning to drive. Is it a big deal to switch from Manual to Auto? If I have the engine and Auto Transmission would there be a lot else to change? Would the ECU need to be changed along with wiring? Is there extra labor cost in swapping both the Engine/Tranny at the same time as compared to just doing the engine?

If you're converting a car from manual to automatic, you will need the auto tranny, the auto ECU, the shifter assembly and auto shifter cable, an automatic-style brake pedal, you'll have to make sure that your radiator has the connections for the transmission cooler hoses, otherwise you'll need an auto radiator... that's about it I guess, not sure if the axles are the same or not.

I believe the axles are different. I'm looking into a swap (the other direction though) and it seems that i'll have to buy axles too... Where is Death? He knows...

EDIT: Dont quote me on this though, there may be a easy way of modding them or converting them. IDK as i haven't actually done it yet, i'm still researching it...

The one manual swap I've been involved directly in [been present and helped with a few more] we swapped the axles but I'm not 100% if that was just good PM or necessary. I wanna say it was necessary but don't quote me on that.
Look it up - I'm sure there's a sticky somewhere for it.

Manual to auto but the same rules apply reversed.

Yes the axles are different, however they are interchangable. Manual Trans axles are just built tougher. And if you find that is incorrect, usually you can get axles cheaply at self serve wrecking places.
i'll trade you everything manual for everything auto. biggrin.gif
PM sent.
