transmission drain plug. - 6G Celicas Forums

i tried to use vice grips to get my stripped plug loose, but they kept on sliding off. any suggestions on how to get it off. i don't have a torch.

tight vice grips and a little hammer. hit it couple at times. make sure is tight..

so you think i should maybe try a new pair of vice grips? the one's i have now are old. my dad had them lying around.

still can't get it off. i've been playing with this foe like an hour and a half now. do you recommend smaller vice grips? any other ideas maybe?

i wouldnt advise using a straight nose vice grips

use the ones that are more like butt nose pliers, like the following.


tap the head of the bolt with a hammar, this will aid the "cracking" of the bolt.

also get some of that can freeze sh!t, duno if you guys have it over there, its a loctite product its a preasure pack can that sprays out has at -30 deg c or something, spray it on the bolt head immediatly before you try to undo it. Making metals colder (below 0 c) shrinks them, making it easier again.

conversly if you like get some gas (oxy acet) onto the box itself to heat it up (dont heat the bolt head) obviously heating expands the metal around the bolt head. If your not experienced with gas i dont advise.tongue.gif

dont heat an aluminum transmission with a torch.

a set of craftsman bolt outs or something similar will work just fine. get a new drain plug and gasket from the dealer.

get a "stud extractor kit". drill into the bolt, tap in splined extractor, slip the slider on and spanner off.

saved me a few times - excellant piece of kit!

not neaded, the bolt out will grab onto it and get it out.

that way risks breaking off a bit of hardened steel inside the plug, now you have a hole in your drain plug with a piece of hardened steel inside of it that makes drilling it any further nearly impossible. and now its leaking because of the hole in it...and you have metal shavings inside the trans.

only drill a drain plug as a LAST resort.

so vice grips didn't work out at all. i don't really wanna drill it either. i guess i'm gonna take it to the shop... unless there are any other ideas. bolt out was too small. only up to 19 mm. the tranny plug is 24mm.

you dont drill all the way through the plug so no way of swarf entering the box. used it many times and never had a problem. if you take it to the garage they'll use an extracor.

i trust you've tried tapping a smaller socket on - sometimes if i'm lucky an imperial socket will fit with a bit of persuasion.
yeah i've tried different sized wrenches, metric and standard.
