Header Installation Question - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #62927 9 posts Started by 6G96GT
So, I bought the ebay header for my 96 GT. I need to paint it with hi-temp paint right? Do I need to prime it first? Also, I have a hi-flow cat too waiting to be installed. My current exhaust setup is bone stock except I DO have a performance Muffler installed. Can I just install the new header and hi-flow cat and that's it? Do I have to do something about the front stock cat/resinator?

you paint it, its gonna burn off and smell funky
they do have special paints for exhaust which takes temps upto 1200 degrees without problems. some use silicone and some use ceramics.

would heat wrap be a better idea?

i would recommend heat wrap, otherwise it will eventually look cancerous like mine used too

Question 1) What should I get for heat wrap for my header?
Question 2) Do I need to replace my stock Down Pipe with some sort of fabricated one or performance one or just leave it alone?

Thanks Guys.
A1), Um, header wrap...they pretty much sell it at any auto part store. But you can check these out Header Wraps
A2) Dunno...PLan on doing a 98 camry manifold swap unless I register my car out of state where there are no emissions testing requirements.
You shouldn't need to have any sort of downpipe, the header you bought should have the downpipe all in one. It butts right up to the flange of the exhaust, I imagine you bought your header from ebay?
yeah, I bought it from surewin (same seller everyone bought theirs from). So, just bolt it right up? Is it ok to thread each bolt and then seat it with a 1/4 inch turn? Or, do I literally have to torque it to spec? Also, my hi-flow cat...do I have to get it welded or not? Thanks guys!
