Hey well im not sure how to check it. But if its been a while since you haven't change it then i would suggest doing it. I bought 3 liters of motul tranny fluid for about $10 a bottle. my 1.8 takes 2.7 ltre to fill have no clue about the 5sfe. So just a little pricey but its good stuff will run much smoother btw that tranny fluid smells like crap

If it's a manual like your profile says its really easy. Take out the fill bolt on the tranny and put your pinky in the hole, you should be able to feel fluid. If not it's low and I would add some tranny fluid or just change it.

Change the fluid if you're gonna get all up in it. You might as well. And you'll be amazed at the results. Simply fab-oooo!
You have to drive it a bit or get it in a good operating temperature and check if it is between the hot marks.
