clutch not disengaging - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #63535 16 posts Started by 1994toyotaracer
hi guys i have a 5sfte celica i had to replace my clutch out due to the more power from the turbo so i get the car done a start it up and it wont go into gear when first staring and when it does i let off the brake and the car pulls like the clutch isnt fully disengaging i tried bleeding the slave cylinder thinking air was in the system but still has the problem.
i have installed
f1 racing clutch stage 2
fidanza lightweight flywheel
new throwout bearing
bleed slave cylinder
put 40w gear oil in transmission
adjusted clutch pedal free play

possibly clutch master or slave cylinder is binding... i had the same problem, replaced both and now its fine. if that still doesnt work, replace lines, there might be a leak. good luck

chechked the slave cylinder everything checked out thanks for input but problem continues
the clutch could be set in the transmission wrong too.

when i installed the clutch i checked it to see if it was flush and i checked it with the installation tool and the tool fit in with no problem 3 times and i pulled the boot of the fork and the disk looks center and the pressure plate fingers seem fine
You didn't put the clutch disc in backwards did you?

no its in there right
I had this problem also.
i made a silver steel slave cylinder push rod, got a braided clutch line, and reco'd the slave and master cylinders.

but im of the opinion the thing that fixed it for me is the pivot ball.
with gtfours (and im assuming 5s too) the clutch fork is cast, and the pivot ball is steel, now over time these 2 wear and effectivly the pivot point moves further from the clutch plate, this gives you less travel.

unfortunatly it means pulling the gearbox off (and in the case of gtfours engine out) and put a 1mm shim under the pivot ball, and i got a new clutch fork, a better way would have been to get a new OE pivot ball but i didnt have the few week waiting time to get one ex japan so i used a shim and cleaned it up.

the tranny uses 75-90 gear oil, not 40W.
if the clutch isnt disengaging, and the slave is working, the problem is prolly the clutch itself.

do you think the gear oil would have something to do with it not shifting into gear it works fine when selecting gears when the car isnt running but when i start it it wont go into gear due to the input shaft turning and on the slave cylinder i checked for possible leaks and didnt find any is there
any other checks to perform

you need to make sure the slave is actually working.
have someone step on the clutch pedal, while you verify that the slave cylinder rod is actually moving the clutch fork.

yeah its working i had my dad press the clutch pedal in an out several times and i tested for a leak but fully compressing the clutch and jamming a prybar between the pedal and the seat keeping the slave cylinder out to see if it would leak and after 20 mins it didnt move

then you prolly installed the clutch disk backward, or installed the TOB wrong.

clutch was labeled flywheel side and throwout bearing just sits on with clips to fork
new info
i can put it in gear when the car is off and start it car sounds like its hard to turn over meaning that its turning the input shaft when starting i can drive threw the gears but there is alot of resistance on the shifter and it sometimes wont go into gear unless i shut the car off and put it in gear then restart it
It's definitely the clutch then. Maybe you got a defective part, but it definitely sounds like it's the clutch.
