I found this while surfing the web. It is a 4.3MB PDF for those with slow connections it may take a while.

It was scanned in from some magazine, basically these guys run a pretty thorough test on 18 brands of fully synthetic and synthetic blends of motor oil.

The results really surprised me!!!! I really am considering switching my favorite oil [Mobil 1 Supersyn)

Read it with a large grain of salt. All of those oils have more than enough film strength for your engine, unless you're driving a Cosworth

Other qualities are much more relevant, but they can't be tested in half an hour with a simple machine. It's pretty much a worthless article.

It's funny that they didn't test Amsoil, which is the best out of all those oils.

True on both responses, but at the end of the article they did say that they were going to run more oil breakdown tests with different oils in an "in engine" test. Maybe something to keep an eye on later?

The article appears to be in an Australian publication and Amsoil may not be widely available there. They also did say they bought all the oil at the local store and Amsoil is generally not available at retail auto parts stores even here, at least in my area.

Yup amsoil isn't widely available here either unless you know a dealer or get it online, i havent found a store that carries it yet. I do hear good things about it though, im curious what the results would have been if they were to have included it here.

All I can say is the price just keeps going up up up up! and for a DD car with over a 150K miles ill just stick to whats on sale at the auto part stores.

mm got to do oil change shortly might see if I can get my hands on some 'royal purple'

any down sides besides I guess the price?

No, just the price, I was fairly lucky to pick up a few extra qts when it was on sale here (only 5.25/qt)...since then Ive seen it go up in price at the base.

Hmm well i have 111,000 miles on my celi. I always go with valvoline extended life. its for cars that have more than 75,000 miles. I would buy royal purple since they sell it at autobacs but i cant since i wont work with my engine. Im swapping out engines later. So royal purple is definetly the oil im getting in the future.

That's funny - when we test oils here we do so under accelerated running, exageratedly harsh temps and conditions and for extremely long periods of time.
BTW - Royal Purple is known in the refinery industry to eat engine seals [The same brands and type seals used on automobile engine BTW]. It is the only oil we void our warranties for. Just FYI

Thats very interesting Death, i have heard so many mixed opinions on royal purple. Most the time people are like "YEHH i swear by the stuff!" and the other set of people say what you did, it eats seals.

I read that royal purple claims it "polishes" the internals, is that what causes it to munch up the seals? And is it cause of extended use or is it from day one, do you know?

It's supposedly a chemical reaction with the elastomers in the seals. To be honest our tests indicate it's not a quick process by any means but to me it's just not something I'd like to have a chance of happening in my engine. There are plenty of good performing lubricants out there without this problem - why risk it?

Good point. I dont want my engine to be eaten. lol. And i guess even if you change the oil often its still kinda lingering on the seals. ew.

I get Amsoil from Joe's (formerly G.I. Joe's) when they go on sale 15% off. It's usually cheaper than buying from a dealer if shipping is involved. I used to use Redline, but it's more expensive than Amsoil, even moreso with the sale.

So after doing some reading, I noted that RP acted much in the same way as seafoam does on the seals. Ie, it pretty much kills the deposits that may be built up, over time of course (at least RP owned up to this in their FAQ). But finding cases of it eating away seals I couldnt find, not saying that it does or dosent. I think the biggest problem is propaganda. You go looking for some info and find biased information because one oil company may be providing the sponsorship in order to conduct the tests. You can see how this can be misleading. Does anyone know of a page that has independent testing of the major oil brands?

Well, any syn shouldnt eat seals anymore. As I was looking for an unbiased review I came across a bunch of stuff about how syn oil used to eat seals. But that was like 20-25 years ago. As time went on, the tech behind syn oil has gotten better, and the eaten seals problem was resolved ( or so I assume). BTW, I did come across this big ol PDF file that some guy had wrote up regarding oil. Apparently Amsoil is rated as the best...and every other "independent" test I read on states the same thing...looks like I might want to make the switch then.

^^ do you have the link to those things? I'm interested in seeing them if you do. That's exactly what I was looking for when I found the PDF in my first post. Independent studies and tests on all these different motor oil brands will give a true view of what oil is superior instead of listening to tests done by manufacturers.

I am in now way saying this is the end all of oil ratings, its just another of the many charts that Ive been looking at regarding oil. But for the most part, everything I have been reading points to amsiol as being the better oil.
