PS3 owners, I have a question - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #63935 65 posts Started by D-Man
I know we have quite a few gamer-members on here, and I'm about to get a PS3, I wanted to know if there is a charge to get online with it, to play multi player games, ect. Is it like the x-box that requires you to subscribe to a service, or can you just plug in and go?

Also, the new GTA; is multi-player only available online?

Playstation network is completely free unless you buy things off of the store like games or add-ons.

GTAIV's multiplayer is online only IIRC, its been a while since ive played it

Cool, and damn.

Hey, whats up with the memory sizes to store files on? Can you save like, WHOLE games and WHOLE movies? or is it for all the BS pic's & mp3's and w/e other crap i've got on my computer?

I have ironman saved to mine and you can download whole games from the store so im sure they will go on it. It's jsut a matter of it getting full or not. If 40/80 gigs isnt enough for you, they allow up to 250gig drives to be put in.

-Brian
What about backwards compatability? How do i know witch ones are and witch ones aren't? Is that something that's "updateable"?

GTA4 is single player. If you go online you can play against other people online.

I'm not sure which ones are available, but I have a 40 gig which is not backwards compatible. The 80 & 160 are.

Yes you can put whole games on there. I have Warhawk on my hard drive. Downside: you can't sell the game later.

MyFlickrMyeBay_Perpetual Aperture_
80g= backwards compatible....but will you really use it?
I'm pretty sure the only backwards compatible ps3 was the orig 60GB model, that is discontinued.

I got one but have never played a PS2 game on it.

someone (on another fourm) told me that it had to have 4usb slots to be backwards compatable? Where can i find this info for sure?

And does that mean it's possible to go and rent a game from block buster... and play it later? wink.gif

60 gig was the only one that had backwards compatibility
40,80, and 160 all dont
80 only has 2 usb ports and no media card reader
original 60 gig had 4 and a media card reader
160 gig * i think* has atleast 4 usb ports, media card reader and bluetooth

online is free, but xbox is set up better... but im perfectly content with the ps3 online

A few great exclusive titles: Resistance 1/2, MGS4, Uncharter, Little Big Planet

Blu Ray smile.gif

Yeah you can copy whole movies or games to it

0o0o0o and the coolest 6gc owners have them tongue.gif

SH!T I just realized i had an 80 since my 60 crashed, and i still played my ps2 games! frown.gif frick frick frick

Manphibian is right - according to the PS3 website, there is no longer backwards compatibility with PS2 games, but some PS titles are still supported.

So you'll have to find an older 60gig that will play them.

IMO: If you have a PS2 - you don't need backwards compatibility since you have the system. Not to mention, you'll probably never play the PS2 titles anymore.

But if you mean go rent a game, copy it onto your HDD and return it, and then be able to play it, no you can't do that.

Why not? Is that what the drive is for? or only for "downloaded from the internets" games? Can you download PS2 titles? I'm trying to NOT buy another PS2 but my chick really want to get the new avatar game... But i cannot play a ps2 title on a new ps3, and i'm not buying a ps2 when i'm at the store for one freakn game mad.gif Plus, i have a few titles from my origonal ps that i'd like to play, including breath of fire 3/4 and dragonseeds. biggrin.gif

WTF is up with the need for massive hard drive then? It's for downloading stuff? what stuff needs to be downloaded so bad? just to save movies on?

Woah wait! I'm getting one too this Christmas for the kids but the only way I'm doing it is if it's backwards compatible. What do I got to do to make sure I get the right one and are there any downsides?

Because what Sony is pushing is a "multimedia" console. You can put downloaded movies on it, music, you can stream videos from your computer wirelessly... The hard drive is your choice, you can get an 80 or 160. I have a 40 which is about 1/2 full right now and I wish I had a larger one for the future. Now you have plenty of room. There is downloadable content for games. Some games have expansion packs and updates...

If you buy a new PS3 - you will NOT have backwards compatibility. If you want another PS2, go on ebay and find a cheap one. Mines sitting in my closet.

If you were able to copy the games when you rent them, it would totally defeat the purpose of them selling games.

*I still have my original NES*

Examples of DLC: track packs for Guitar Hero, expansion levels & vehicles for Warhawk, characters & levels for Force Unleashed, car packs for Need for Speed....

What do you find cluttering up your hard drive sprynt? Updates and expansions, or random music and pictures and crap?

Because i've had my reg x-box for several years and still haven't uploaded more than half a cd on to it laugh.gif I have no need for a "multimedia center" as that's what i have my computers for. (and damn, i've got like 8 and a joint TeraBite between them all kindasad.gif )

But if there are that many updates and expansions and w/e then i'll go ahead and get the 80... IDK what it'll be used for, that's why i'm asking what you use yours for.

what clogs up my harddrive:
DEMO's, trailers, previews
some games install stuff (mgs4 has a pretty large download)
pictures
music
Most of what I have is game saves, game updates, maybe a demo or two. I have Warhawk on my HDD because I got it cheaper for downloading it instead of buying the disc.

I have 2 albums on their because I'd listen to those instead of game music while playing WH. I do have some pictures for wallpaper and some themes.

Point being is: you have to get an 80 or 160 if your buying new. If your buying used you can buy smaller but they started putting the 80 in instead of the 40 for the same price, so it's not going to cost you anymore.

Honestly, if I were buying new I'd be getting the 160 w/Uncharted. Since that game is amazing and your only paying $100 more for double the capacity.

also, what do i have to do to utilize my HI-DEF to it's fullest capacity? This is one of the major reasons i'm getting a ps3, the massive amout of details. Besides, i wanna utilise my big ass tv to it's fullest tongue.gif

Secondly, i asked earlier, but didn't get an answer. Is it free to play online? like would it be free to play GTA4 online multiplay mode?

and finaly, what are some good games? I was gunna get assisans creed to start me off with. or the new spider man shadows game...

for the record, (i think) all of the 60gig PS3s have the hardware for BC. The earlier 80gig models have software emulation for BC and the rest are not to keep the cost down.

Id try to find a 60gig (or get a new 40gig if you dont want BC) and get a 250gig drive from newegg for $70

I will say that the BC on my 80gig isnt that great. I downloaded a psone game off the store and it doesnt play too well. i have yet to put in a ps2 game however

and like i said in the first post its COMPLETELY FREE TO PLAY ONLINE

just need a HDMI cable for HD. Cheap ones are same as expensive ones wink.gif

Online is totally FREE out of the box.

Good games:

Uncharted Drake's Fortune
Call of Duty 4
Little Big planet
etc.

What type of game you like?

-LukeMy Flickr
Yes you'll want an HDMI cable, you can get them for real cheap: ~$5. Don't go to Best Buy they'll offer a Monster HDMI cable for like, $100 when it's digital so the signal gets there or it doesn't there's no interference.

And no, you don't have to install ALL games. I bought SOCOM: Confrontation recently and that DID involve a game install - not sure why. But all my other games don't require that.

YES! It is FREE to play online. Just create a PSN username and some other info and you're good to go.

Good games that will be cheap: Uncharted: Drakes Fortune! IMO one of the best games I've ever played. It's fun, its replayable, it's beautiful to look at. Assassins Creed is a good game, I sold mine because I beat it and had no desire to play it again. I have StarWars Force Unleashed also, which is a little short, but it's fun and replayable. There is also expansion levels planned for it also. GTA4 I never play. I regret buying it. It's just too much like the other ones.

Okay, online is free unless i keep something. Got it. Just any old LAN internet connection is needed?

What the hell is little big planet? looks strange...

I like action/adventure games, usualy with a nice big map biggrin.gif like spiderman games, gta's, legend of zelda, and i have a passion for Sonic the hedgehog games :thumbups: i dislike first person shooters; i prefer the 3rd person perspective. Trying to grap up a ps3 before Prototype comes out biggrin.gif

Is that what the interfaces starts as? Meaning does the back of the PS3 have the HDMI out? Because i've already got an hdmi-hdmi laying arround in my closet right now, plus my TV suports that kind of thing. So I probably wont have to buy anything else then, yeah?

You're still misunderstanding. You can't "keep" anything, but there's nothing to keep anyways. The games have online playability so either you just play them online in some capacity for free. Some, not all, games are available as a download, instead of buying the disc in the store. Often these games are cheaper ($40) instead of $60. This was the case for Warhawk. Demos are free, expansions cost money. For example, a 3 track "pack" for GH3 might cost $6.

You will need broadband internet. I use wireless G and it seems to be ok (for the most part).

HDMI to HDMI cable? That's just an HDMI cable. Yes the PS3 has an HDMI out, as well as A/V out. If your TV has HDMI in then you just connect the PS3 directly to it and your golden.

lol, I meant that it's free as long as i dont download anything onto my hard-drive like an expansion pack or a psone game or something.

As for broadband, I'll be using ethernet (CAT5) hook up. Is that possible? or MUST i buy a wireless hub/router?

alot of tv's dont have HDMI on them still. Plus i've got like 40 different hi-def wires, ranging in all possible combonations. i've got hdmi-anything, lol. that's why i refere to it as hdmi-hdmi. rolleyes.gif

The PS3 has a ethernet port on it, you don't have to use wireless.

So to sum it up:

PS3 can be used with HDMI, optical, or A/V. It can be used wireless internet, or wired internet.

My current setup is HDMI out to the 42'' 1080p plasma and optical audio out to my 7.1 surround sound.
