Ok Im used to driving stick shift but my current Celica is an Auto. well my friends and dad are telling me that driving in city driving with the Over Drive on is bad for the car? And that i should only turn it on over 50mph? im still unsure about this as other friends of mine always drive with their Over Drive on. Does anyone know for sure about this?
Dunno...my overdrive is always on...whenver it's off I notice that it burns fuel faster (revs a bit faster and higher into the rpms) due to not having the fourth gear engaged. If you're a safe daily driver that won't speed up then the engine should be fine otherwise you might end up hurting the engine in the long run.

overdrive means ur car will go the the fourth gear
overdrive off means it only goes to third

its fine to drive with overdrive on, on regular streets
personally....i kick it off when i know i'm going to go from cruising to passing someone, as passing in 3rd gear is much more enjoyable than passing in 4th or beginning to pass and then having the trans downshift on me. i also turn it off when ascending or descending steep grades and when driving on very slick roads, such as ice and snow. the reason for that is because i dont want an unexpected up or down shift while i'm concentrating on the road.

I snapped my timing belt and seized up my waterpump the last time I took it out of overdrive on a camry. That was scary.
Keep it on OD...better gas mileage. As far as I know, turning OD off is only necessary if you're hauling a trailer or going up a hill like someone said.
ive turned OD off on races in my auto and it def helps
well since we're talking about automatic shifting....i figure it would be appropriate..
is it bad to go down to 1st, kick it to 2nd, then drive, then OD?

its not meant to go from L -> 2 -> D -> OD
tho you'd think it'd be ok right? but i dont know why but i *think* (not completely sure) it kills ur tranny 2x as fast

wut?

uh what gears do you think L, 2, D, and OD are? 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. 'manually' shifting your automatic is nothing more than causing a physical (via a change of fluid flow) lockout of a certain gear or gears. it will NOT cause damage to the transmission, you're more likely to damage an engine by over revving it than you are to damage the transmission. don't post such fallacies to be taken as fact.

i know what they stand for bitter. but i wasnt sure if it damaged your tranny but thats what i heard. my bad, otherwise, yeah, dont overrev then haha

ive had OD off on all gears and KILLED civics, integras when they were packin a lot more hp.
one thing i dont reccomend doing on an auto transmission is gassing it in neutral and then putting it in gear.

Once again, racing isn't condoned here.

Keep OD on unless you're hauling a trailer...and don't manually shift, that's stupid as well and can cause wear.
engine braking is useful in some situations, dissallowing a higher gear is also useful in some situations. if you were never supposed to have anything other than nuetral, drive, reverse, and park, then there would be no need for 2 low range selections and an overdrive button.
